After the United States, India, Greece and even the United States, my fifth trip of the year 2012 took place in Morocco, while Ramadan was in full swing and the sun of August promised a tanning like "cremated bread" to all the reckless or the reckless who do not fear it enough. And as usual, I give you this travel story to help you if you plan to go there, or to make you travel without traveling otherwise.

I absolutely wanted to take advantage of these holidays to pass my 1st level of diving, even if Morocco is not necessarily the most rated destination for that, since I had already made 9 dives during my past trips, without ever having stop long enough to pass my level 1.

So I chose a city on the Atlantic coast (I did not want to go to the Mediterranean) which has a diving club and not too far from other interesting places that I can visit once my level has passed.

My choice fell on Agadir, well served at the level of airlines, and not too far from interesting places like Essaouira, Casablanca and especially Marrakech, and I went there with my girlfriend for two weeks.

Agadir

Let's be clear right now, Agadir, it's ugly. The city was completely destroyed in 1960 by an earthquake, and everything was rebuilt in the "utilitarian" style of the suburbs of the 60s.

On the other hand Agadir, it is 340 days of sun per year and a proximity with the Atlantic Ocean which guarantees the freshness in summer and the softness in winter, and a splendid bay. The modern 5-star hotels, at very affordable prices out of season, are sumptuous, beautiful palaces with all the comforts that will make you feel like a sultan for a few nights.

This makes Agadir a seaside town perfect for relaxing between a swim in the pool and a Moroccan massage with argan oil, but disappointing if you want to touch the heart of Morocco. That's good, I mainly "farniente" in this city, and especially passed my first level of diving, which explains why I stayed a week, much longer than what is recommended (3 days maximum).

I must be one of the few French to have passed my level 1 in Agadir, because the Atlantic Ocean with its strong currents does not have the clearest waters nor the hottest. But that allowed me to meet some adorable members of the ASAN association. If you want to dive in Agadir or go hiking or caving, I highly recommend them, they are super cool and will go out of their way to please you.

I took advantage of my stay in the city to meet one of my staff, Younes, who lives there and who moderates and animates the comments of my trainings, and manages part of the after-sales service. It has been a pleasure to meet him in the flesh after months of collaboration, if you work for a long time with someone via the Internet and you go in his corner, do not miss this opportunity, real meetings are part of human adventure and have a charm that can never replace the virtual.

From my previous dive level - which allows me to dive anywhere in the world to 12 meters alone, and up to 20 meters supervised by a dive director - I went with my girlfriend on Essaouira, the first truly typical city of our trip.

Essaouira

Essaouira

The road from Agadir to Essaouira is quite pretty, and sometimes even thinks of the famous Road One that connects Los Angeles and San Francisco when the mountain joins the sea and the mist gets involved.

Like a look of Road One between L.A. and San Francisco ... But we are in Morocco!

In addition to green oases in a rather rocky environment, we meet fish sellers who offer us fresh peach ... directly on the road, and sellers of argan oil lounging in the shade of an argan tree who seem so alone in the midst of nothing that they seem to have emerged from a hiding place underground where they return once night has fallen.

Once arrived in Essaouira, we leave the car on a guarded parking at the entrance, because just like Rhodes, the old city is surrounded by a wall and its winding medieval streets are forbidden to cars.

As soon as we enter we are struck by the atmosphere that reigns there, very different from that of Agadir (it is saying little!). Tourists make their way between the mopeds, bikes, carriages, dogs, cats and stalls of overflowing merchants....
