Water: its roles in the body
Water is a vital element in all of nature and in the human body.

It represents on average 60% of its weight. The body is a kind of sponge that must always stay moist. Thus, there is 42 kg of water in a body of 70 kg. But the importance of the proportion of water decreases with age. From 75% in infants to about 55% in the elderly.

The human body does not store water, so you can not live long without drinking. Already a water deficit of 5 to 10% causes great weakness and when it reaches 20%, it is fatal.

Where is the water?

Water is everywhere in the body but it is unequally distributed.

All body fluids: blood plasma, sweat, saliva, tears, cerebrospinal fluid and all digestive juices contain 96 to 99% water.

The brain is made up of 76% water, 81% in the kidneys, 78% in the lungs. Fat (30%) and bones (25%) are poorer.

As for the muscle mass, it contains 73 to 75% of water. Because of its importance, this is where half of the body's water is.

What is the water for?

All the cells that make up the body are filled with water: it is intracellular water. But they also bathe in the water: it is extra cellular water.

A perpetual movement is constantly taking place between the two environments.

Water dissolves and transports all substances by transporting them inside and outside each cell and cell to cell.

All cellular reactions need water because it provides the Hydrogen atom they need.

Water contributes to thermal regulation: when body temperature rises, perspiration refreshes it.

Water removes much of the metabolic waste in the urine.

The blood passes constantly in the kidneys where it is filtered: most of the water is reabsorbed, thus returning to the general circuit but a small amount causes the elements that are to be eliminated: these are the urine.
