THE STORK
Physical description
The stork is a large bird of the
family Ciconiidae, measuring an average of 1 meter for a weight of 2 to 6 kg.
It is characterized by long red legs (20 to 25 cm), a long straight and pointed
beak that can reach 19 cm, and mainly black or white plumage. Its wings are
long and wide, reaching a wingspan of 2 meters once deployed.
His place of life
Most species are distributed between
Europe, Asia and Africa. Only one species occurs in South America. The stork
inhabits open areas such as meadows, plains, cultivated lands, marshes, swamps,
etc.
His diet
The storks have a very varied diet
and find most of their food on the ground, among low vegetation, and in shallow
water. They feed on insects, amphibians, small mammals, small rodents, chicks,
fish, molluscs, crustaceans, etc.
His reproduction
The stork builds its large nest of
branches in trees or on buildings. Each year the female usually lays 2 to 6
eggs, which hatch 33 to 42 days after laying. Both parents take turns to
incubate the eggs and feed the cigogneaux. They leave nest 58 at 70 days after
hatching, and continue to be fed by parents for an additional 7 to 20 days.
His life expectancy
The stork can live on average 20
years in the natural state and 30 years in captivity.
The cry of the stork
The storks communicate with each
other by snapping their beaks quickly. The sound produced is called crackling
or crackling.
Particular signs
Storks can not sing or shout because
unlike other birds, they do not have tracheobronchial muscle around the syrinx,
the organ that allows them to make vocalizations.
