The invention of
the automobile (1883) - The car
The first motor
vehicle (car) functional was invented in 1769 by Joseph Cugnot under the name
of Cugnot fardier, but for the first gasoline model it was necessary to await
the inspiration of a textile engineer named Edouard Delamare-Deboutteville . In
1883, in Rouen, this stranger mounted a small two-cylinder gasoline engine
lighting of its manufacture, on a "hunting hunt" horse-drawn. He
files a patent, but does not manufacture the car, preferring to specialize in
gas engines.
The first
attempts to replace horses with a driving force date back to the 17th century.
Steam seemed to be the most promising, but it was not until the late eighteenth
century that it was a real success. The first motor vehicle - the term
"moving by oneself!" - is the steamer built by the French engineer
Joseph Cugnot in 1770. However, this vehicle was of limited use. Less practical
vehicles were then built by French, American and British engineers, including
William Murdoch, James Watt and William Symington.
From steam to an
explosion engine
In 1789, the
American Oliver Evans filed his first patent for a steam car! in 1803 he built
the first self-propelled vehicle. In Europe, the British mining engineer
Richard Trevithick built in 1801, the first steam car he called London
Carriage. In Great Britain, the years 1820-1840 were the golden age of road
vehicles with steam engines. These were built by engineers like Gurney, Hancock
and Macerone. However, this young industry was ephemeral. Indeed, the advent of
the railroad put an end to the development of road vehicles with steam. This
tradition was however reconsidered when the French inventors and engineers,
like the Bollée family, Léon Serpollet, as well as the Count De Dion and his
engineers Bouton and Trépardoux, built efficient steam vehicles in the 1870s
and 1880s.
Car In 1862, the
Frenchman Beau de Rochas invented the first four-stroke cycle. In 1866 the two
German engineers Eugen Langen and August Otto developed a gas engine, and in 1876
Otto built a four-stroke engine, the source of most later internal combustion
engines.
Three years
later, the German Carl Benz makes a motor tricycle that sells two copies, and
passes to posterity. The automobile industry was born. On the occasion of the
1889 World Fair, the first steam vehicle halfway between the car and the
tricycle, developed by Serpollet-Peugeot, is presented.
The automobile
becomes an industry
In 1900, the
United States, France and Germany already produced 9504 cars. Eight years later,
Henry Ford invents his model T, which he will build millions of copies on its
assembly lines. Thanks to him, the fast individual transport for all is born.
The automobile
revolutionized transportation and led to profound social changes, particularly
in the relationship of individuals to space. It has promoted the development of
economic and cultural exchanges and led to the massive development of new
infrastructures (roads and highways, car parks).
