Terrorism is a method of carrying out violent actions (attacks,
assassinations, abductions, sabotage ...) against an adversary, in particular a
government and the population that assures its legitimacy, so that their
psychological impact far exceeds the circle of direct victims to include the
group they are supposed to represent
If an agreement exists on the concept, the delimitation of the
terrorist phenomenon remains complex. From a historical point of view, its
known uses can be traced back to the Zealots sect and then to that of the
Assassins. The conceptualization of the Terror will be the work of the French
Revolution but will also be claimed by Lenin in Russia. Today the term
terrorism is pejorative. Its many definitions often betray the interests of those
who write them is generally accepted that terrorism is the weapon of the weak
against the strong, for others (Noam Chomsky for example) the states and
institutions also use this method. If we follow Gérard Chaland, terrorist
actions are sometimes confused with war, guerrilla warfare or banditry.
Attempts to develop a typology of the use of terrorism hinder the heterogeneity
of terrorists. Classifications (individual or organized action, type of
doctrine, morality of choice of targets, etc.) exist but are not sufficient to
account for the phenomenon. In the end, terrorism showed that it could achieve
its ends in the context of anticolonial struggles (Independence of Ireland) and
that it could mediate unrecognized causes (Palestine). On the other hand, unless
it is coupled with a coherent political agenda, it has never allowed any
terrorist movement to reach power.
