The Princess and the Pea
Once upon a time there was a prince who wanted to marry a princess, but
a real princess. He circled the Earth to find one, but there was always
something wrong; princesses, it was not lacking, but were they real princesses?
It was hard to appreciate; always one thing or the other did not seem perfect
to him. He went home very sad, he would have wanted to meet a real princess.
One evening, in awful weather, lightning and thunder, waterfalls of rain
that were frightening, there was a knock on the door of the city and the old
king himself went to open. It was a princess who was there, outside. But great
gods! what did she look like in that rain, by this weather! The water ran from
her hair and clothes, entered through the toe of her shoes and out of her heel
... and she pretended to be a true princess!
"We'll see that," thought the old queen, but she said nothing.
She went to the bedroom, took off all the bedding, and put a little pea at the
bottom of the bed; she then took twenty mattresses, which she piled on the pea,
and over it she put twenty more eiderdown quilts. That's what the princess had
to sleep that night. In the morning, she was asked how she had slept.
"Terribly bad," she replied, "I have almost not closed
the night's eye. God knows what was in this bed. I was lying on something so
hard that I have bruises and blacks all over my body! It's terrible! "

Then they recognized that she was a true princess since, through the
twenty mattresses and twenty eider feather comforters, she had felt the pea.
Such sensitive skin could only be that of an authentic princess.
The prince took her for his wife, sure now that she had found a real
princess, and the pea was exposed in the cabinet of art treasures, where it can
still be seen if no one has won. And this is a real story.
