THE CICADA

Physical description

The cicada is an insect of the order Hemiptera, brown in color, 5 to 8 centimeters long. There are also green cicadas, which prefer to settle on very green plants. Her mouth has a kind of long rigid tube called rostrum, which she plants in roots and plants to feed. It has four long transparent wings with black lines or dots depending on the species.

His place of life

The cicada is found in Europe and the United States. During the first and the longest part of its life, the cicada lives in the ground. It is only towards the end of her life that she comes out of the ground and then settles on a stem, a trunk, in the trees or in the bushes.

His diet

The cicadas eat only the sap of trees, plants or roots that they take with their rostrum.

His reproduction

Towards the end of her life, from August to the end of September, the female lays up to 400 eggs at the base of the trunk of shrubs and grasses. In late summer or fall, the eggs produce larvae that will burrow into the soil. During the last year of her life, the nymph comes out of the ground and settles on a stem or a trunk, sometimes even on a stone. The cicada then turns into an adult insect to reproduce for 4 to 6 weeks.

His life expectancy

The larvae of the cicada usually live 4 to 6 years underground (although for some species this period can last up to 17 years!). On the other hand, the adult lives only a few weeks in the open air.

In cicadas, only the male emits a cry, called cymbalization, to attract females.

Particular signs

The cicadas have a singing system that is unique among the insects that they use to hear or emit sounds (in the male) or to hear only (in the female). While other insects use their wings or paws to sing, they use a membrane called cymbal that deforms to emit amplified vibrations in an almost completely empty abdomen for better resonance.
