THE CARIBOU

Physical description
Caribou are cervids belonging to the Rangifer tarandus species. In other words, the caribou is a ruminant mammal. Reindeer and caribou are difficult to differentiate, except for their location.
Males weigh up to 180 kg and average 1.30 m at the withers. Females weigh only 100 kg for a height of 1.10 m.
Both sexes carry woods (or plumes, in Quebec) on their heads, which they lose in autumn. These woods are red in color then dark brown. The blood vessels inside the plumes allow their growth.
Its very large hooves, equipped with a tuft of hair between the fingers, act as natural snowshoes for walking in the snow.
His place of life
Caribou's natural habitat is boreal forests. Although of the same species, caribou are located in North America while reindeer are located in Europe. Moreover, it is also found in the northern regions of Quebec.
His diet
Caribou feed primarily on grasses, bushes, bark and lichens. To be able to feed, this cervid must search under the snow. Depending on the season, he migrates from one region to another to survive.
His reproduction
Caribou mature at two-and-a-half years of age. The gestation period of the female lasts an average of 240 days. She can give birth to a small caribou, or two. Once born, the small caribou weighs between 4.5 and 8 kg. Many of them do not survive the cold and the snow.
His life expectancy
A caribou can live 12 to 15 years in the wild, while in captivity it can reach the age of 20 years.
His shout
Caribou can make a variety of cries, including snarling, bray, and grunting.
Particular signs
The caribou are able to swim thanks to their hollow hairs.

Wolf, lynx, and bear are among the predators that hunt caribou.
