The Seven Wonders of the World, whose genesis of the list is unknown, constitute the ensemble of the seven most extraordinary architectural and artistic works of the ancient world. They all correspond to achievements that far exceed common proportions. These works show that with rudimentary means compared to contemporary technologies, architects and builders of the time were able, by dint of toil and ingenuity

The canonical list

These works are located around the Mediterranean basin:

1. The pyramid of Cheops in Memphis (today, Giza or Giza), in Egypt (the only wonder still standing today);

2. Suspended Gardens of Babylon, in Mesopotamia (or possibly Nineveh, Assyria) (present-day Iraq);

3. The chryselephantine statue of Zeus at Olympia, Elis (Greece);

4. The Temple of Artemis, also called "Artemision", Ephesus, Ionia (present-day Turkey);

5. The tomb of Mausolus at Halicarnassus, also called "Mausoleum of Halicarnassus", in Caria (present-day Turkey);

6. The bronze statue of Helios, called "Colossus of Rhodes" on the Greek island of that name;

7. The tower-lantern of Pharos, called "lighthouse of Alexandria" in Egypt.

Their dates of construction, approximate for the most part, extend over several centuries, between about 2650 BC. J. - C. for the pyramid of Cheops and the beginning of the third century av. J.-C. for the lighthouse of Alexandria, considered the most recent. Today, the wonder of Memphis still exists, while all others have disappeared, having suffered fires, bad weather, earthquakes, and also the hand of man. The existence of all these marvels is more or less attested by archaeological witnesses, except for the hanging gardens of Babylon, of which there is no conclusive evidence and whose historical reality is still in question.
