The writing of Arabic is
a phenomenon that can be studied, either as a graphic system of Arabic or from
the point of view of the technical modalities of this writing.
The graphic system has an
alphabet, diacritic marks, numbers. This system evolves during its history, the
fourth century of the current era to the present day. The writing of the Arabic
language in other writing systems raises the problem of transliteration and
transcription. The use of the Arabic writing system to write other languages
poses problems of adaptation.
The modalities of writing
Arabic also evolve over time. Calligraphy is a highly developed art at all
times of Arab culture. The invention of the printing press leads to the
creation of glyphs collected in Arabic font. Typing leads to the manufacture of
typewriter keyboards with all the alphabetic and diacritical characters of
Arabic. The advent of computer technology allows the invention of
high-performance programs to render on screen all the aesthetic beauties of
Arabic writing.
Arabic is written and
read from right to left (sinistroverse).

The graphic system of
Arabic makes it possible to write the three languages corresponding to
classical Arabic, to modern standard Arabic also called literary Arabic, and to
the different variants of dialectal Arabic.

From the Phoenician
alphabet come three alphabets, Greek, Paleo-Hebrew, and Aramaic. From the
Aramaic alphabet derive then several alphabets including Syriac and Nabataean,
sources of the Arabic alphabet which develops from the fourth century of the
current era.

The Arabic alphabet is of
the abjad type which notes exclusively the consonants of the phonological
system of the Arabic language.
The writing of letters is
different depending on whether the letter is at the beginning of the word, in
the middle or in the end, or even isolated. There is no capital, for example at
the beginning of the sentence.
