Dariya is a city in Saudi Arabia located in
the northwestern suburbs of the Kingdom's capital, Riyadh.
History
Dariya is the original home of the Al Saud
family, since it was founded in 1446-1447 by one of their ancestors named Mani
Al-Mraydi.
The city first reached its peak in the 16th
century, becoming a major commercial center. The Arabian Peninsula was at that
time very divided: Dariya and its region is one of the only oases to escape the
hold of the Ottoman Empire and the sheriffs of Mecca.
Two groups of the Banu Hanifa tribe, Al
Mouqrin and Al Watban, emerge and compete for power in Dariya. The latter
prevailed at first, but in 1720 Saud ben Mohammed Al Mouqrin, expelled his
rivals, but was in turn overthrown in 17251.
His son Mohammed Ibn Saoud finally took
control of Dariya in 1727, and made it the capital of the first Saudi state
when it was founded in 1744, and kept this status until 1818, when the Ottomans
took and sacked the city, causing the collapse of the Saudi kingdom. The
Emirate of the Nejd who succeeds him that year prefers to move his capital to
Ryad in 1824, three years after Dariya was ransacked a second time. From then
on, the abandoned city will remain in ruins1.
The at-Turaïf district is inscribed on
UNESCO's World Heritage List2.
Today, the city is the seat of Dariya
Governorate, located in the province of Riyadh, which includes among others the
villages of Uyaynah, Jubayla and Al-Ammariyyah.
Excavations in progress
As of February 2009 and even 6 months
earlier (access was already restricted in March 2008), the Dariya area has been
closed to visitors, probably due to renovations that appear to be increasingly
important. According to site officials, it would likely be closed for up to two
years. Excavations are organized and numerous column bases and drainage systems
have been discovered.
