The brain belongs to the central nervous system.
Function of the brain
Located in the cranial box, the brain is the seat of higher functions
(cognitive functions, senses, nervous responses) and vegetative functions. It
is therefore an essential organ that regulates all vital functions. The brain
receives information from the entire human body via afferent nerves, integrates
and analyzes them, and responds by emitting new signals that descend to the
parts of the body concerned by the efferent nerves.
The brain is thus responsible for the heart and respiratory rhythm,
functions that for us are unconscious. But he is also involved in decision
making, body motricity, behavior, memory, consciousness ...
The brain has been mapped and some areas seem to be associated with
specific functions (speech area ...), whereas the more complex functions
(memory, consciousness) seem to be much more distributed.
Structure of the brain
The human brain has about 100 billion neurons and has an average weight
of 1,300 to 1,400 grams. It also contains glial cells and astrocytes. He bathes
in the cerebrospinal fluid.
The brain is composed of two hemispheres, right and left, connected to
each other by the corpus callosum composed of white substance (axons wrapped in
myelin). Divided into lobes, the hemispheres are the most developed parts in
mammals.
The brain is divided into several parts, depending on their embryonic
origin:
• the telencephalon, the upper part, composed of the cerebral cortex and
the striatum;
• the diencephalon, which contains the thalamus and the hypothalamus
(endocrine glands);
• the midbrain;
• the cerebellum (motor coordination and learning of routine movements);
• the bridge of Varole;
• the medulla oblongata (control of reflex and vegetative movements:
breathing, moderation of the cardiac rhythm, regulation of the arterial smooth
muscles) which communicates with the spinal cord.
The cerebral cortex is the outer layer of the brain and contains the
majority of neurons (gray matter). The meninges are protective covers (dura
mater, arachnoid and pia mater) between the cortex and the skull bone. The
cerebral cortex is subdivided into five brain lobes according to their
position:
• the frontal lobe (motor skills, memory, reasoni
