BADGER

Physical description

This small mammal is recognizable by its two longitudinal white stripes that cross its face, going from the muzzle to the bottom of the neck. The badger's coat alternates shades of gray, white and black. The female is called "blairelle". It is as big as the male, measuring up to 70 cm. It weighs between 12 and 15 kg, but can reach 20 kg at the end of autumn, just before starting a slowed life that will last all winter.

His place of life

The badger is typical of European countries. He lives in the forest, where he builds his burrow.

His diet

An essentially nocturnal animal, the badger is omnivorous, eating a few eggs, rabbits, insects, rodents, tubers, frogs, vipers, moles and earthworms (of which he is a big consumer). It is a gourmet animal that participates in the elimination of pests to humans.

His reproduction

Badger breeding takes place between January and March; Egg fixation and pregnancy last for 1 year, so babies are born around February of the following year. Badger babies are called "blaireautins". Each litter can offer 2 to 7 pups that will stay in their burrow for about 2 months. The mortality rate of blaireautins is very high: about 50%. In adulthood, it decreases to 30%.

In its natural environment, the badger lives 14 years; in captivity, he lives up to 16 years.

Particular signs
