The United Arab Emirates is subdivided into seven emirates,
themselves made up of several enclaves whose borders have been abolished but
whose sovereignty is sometimes unclear.
Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate. It occupies 87% of the total area
of the country (67,340 km2), its capital Abu
Dhabi is also the seat of the federal government of the seven emirates. The
emirate of Abu Dhabi has two large land borders with Saudi Arabia and the
Sultanate of Oman.
The Emirate of Dubai, which stretches along the Persian Gulf for 72
km, occupies 5% of the total area of the country, or about 3,885 km2.
The emirate of Sharjah stretches 16 km on the coast and 80 km
inland.
The emirates of the north, Ajman (the smallest of them with only
259 km2), Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah and Umm al Qaïwain have a total area of 3 881 square kilometers and occupy 5% of
the total area of the country.
