The animal food
chain
Animals feed on
plants, other animals, or both, depending on which group they belong to. Some
animals are predators for some breeds and for others they are prey. It depends
on their size, their eating habits and many other factors. But they all have a
place in the food chain.
The food chain is
the process by which one animal is the food of another, and that other animal
is also food for other species and so on. For example, the aphid is eaten by
the ladybug that is caught by the spider which is the food of a bird that falls
prey to a fox ... and so on. It is the law of the strongest who eats the
weakest.
The herbivorous
animal eats plants, such as grass, bark, leaves ... plants are therefore the
base of the food chain for herbivores. For carnivores, insects and other
smaller animals are the basis of their diet. Larger animals are not spared
because a group of smaller predators can control larger animals.
Everything is
reused in nature and animals and plants always end up being the meal of another
animal species. The elephant has no natural predators, but when it dies, it
becomes the feast of the scavenger animals. The remains too small to feed an
animal will fall prey to flies and other small insects.
So all animals
will be food of other species and they all have a place in the food chain.
Removing a species has repercussions on the rest of the chain that depends on
it for food. The tiny marine plankton serves as food for the whales, who must
eat huge quantities of them to eat. You remove the plankton and the whales
disappear because they can not feed anymore.
One of the
problems in the food chain is that everything is eaten from one animal to
another to end up with animals that have fewer predators like humans. When an
animal eats an insect, it digests it so that it can use the components of the
insect's cells for its own organism. Some pollution products, such as lead, are
not easily removed by the digestive system and will infect the animal. A bird
that feeds insect-contaminated insecticide or other product will also be
contaminated. If a wolf eats this bird, it will be contaminated too and so on.
The food chain
begins with bacteria and other microscopic insects that break down carcasses or
feces. They are in their turn eaten by worms, birds ... to large animals that
die to feed scavengers and bacteria that restart the cycle of the food chain.
