Health and Safety Egypt

Health

The first problem in Egypt is that of intense human concentration in the capital: Cairo is one of the most populous and polluted cities in the world.

That means :
- asthmatic and cardiac, attention;
- defective general hygiene;
- deplorable food hygiene: Cairo is one of the champion destinations of the world of turista!

The famous dust of Cairo is terribly slippery in case of rain: watch out for falls and cars that do not brake anymore. Other reasons for falls, roads and sidewalks, so look where you put your feet. And absolute caution with cars and buses, many pedestrian accidents mowed every day.

immunizations

- No vaccine is required for travelers from Europe.

- "Universal" vaccines (diphtheria, tetanus, polio, whooping cough, Repevax or Boostrixtetra): a reminder every 15 years for people who are up to date with their vaccines. Hepatitis B: Immunity that is longer as the primary vaccination was made early in life (before the age of 20, probable immunity for life).

- Hepatitis A: highly recommended by the WHO, because it is one of the most easily contracted diseases (through diet). After the first injection (protective 15 days later, almost 100%), a second injection 6 to 18 months later probably results in immunity for life.

- There is a very high rate of hepatitis C. Avoid at all costs piercings, barbers or hairdressers popular. If you have to undergo a small surgery, make sure you go to the most famous clinics. For dentists, it's the same thing. "The more chic it is, the more likely you are to be well cared for", it's like that!

- In case of long stay, expatriation or stay in rural areas, vaccines against rabies and typhoid are recommended.

- Consult the list of international vaccination centers in France.

General advice

- There is no more risk of malaria, except in Fayoum, where there are some foci of minor malaria, but this does not justify preventive treatment.

- The risk of urogenital schistosomiasis is high in some areas; be very careful about the places where you bathe: swimming in the canals, small lakes or the Nile is to be avoided. Schistosomiasis is nowadays very well treated, provided that the diagnosis is made before complications.

- AIDS, which is not widespread, is nevertheless increasing (especially among young people), as in the whole of the Middle East, and the use of condoms (capout inglesi) remains naturally indispensable (it is found in all pharmacies). Contraceptive means are very limited. Better to plan before leaving.

- Diarrhea and turista are the lot of almost half of the tourists. If this happens to you, eat light (rice without fat), drink a lot (water and soda). Do not eat anywhere. Always have a good intestinal antibiotic and a bowel movement retarder, just in case.

- It is better to buy food in large grocery stores. But it is often difficult to read the expiry dates, written in Arabic! Avoid what is sold in small kiosks because it can stay a long time in the heat.

- Do not drink tap water unless it is consumed via Lifestraw (the most economical individual process). It is a kind of individual straw that filters bacteria, viruses and parasites (up to 99.99%: never seen before) with a capacity of 1000 l, the consumption of one person in 1 year. Otherwise, always buy carefully capped mineral water.

- It is important to drink a lot in Egypt, especially to avoid any risk of dehydration because of the heat. Remember to bring a bottle of mineral water with you, especially at the sites.

- Sun: it is essential to bring a sun cream high index (available only in large pharmacies in Egypt). On the contrary, the nights can sometimes be cool, or even downright cold and wet on the Nile and in the desert. To ensure that beautiful felucca cruises do not turn into night-time hell, put on warm clothes.

- In the Red Sea, wear plastic shoes or old sneakers to go in the water, because the stone fish are formidable and corals lead to very deep cuts, long to heal. Without falling into the paranoid, there have been several fatal attacks of sharks in recent years.

- It is advisable to buy powerful mosquito repellents in France. It is also found in pharmacy in Egypt.

- Medicines are much cheaper in Egypt than in Europe. Since pharmacy studies are in English, you should not have a problem communicating.
