The Sheikh Zayed Mosque, with its total area of 22,412 square meters and its
capacity to accommodate up to
40,000 visitors, is the largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates and the
ninth largest in the world1. Its name comes from Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al
Nahyan, the first president of the United Arab Emirates and sponsor of the
building.
It is also the largest marble structure built to date by man. It
contains the largest chandelier and the largest handmade carpet in the world.
It is located in Abu Dhabi, to the east of the capital of the same
name. It is the largest and richest emirate of the seven member states of the
United Arab Emirates2.
Its construction extended from 1995 to 2007, 12 years of work for a
total cost of about 2 billion dirhams of the United Arab Emirates (about 400
million euros) and is the result of a collaboration of engineers and
international artisans, and 2,500 workers working at 40 ° C.
In Abu Dhabi, the 200 local mosques are closed to non-Muslims, but
the Sheikh Zayed mosque is an exception, and tourists can visit it.
Project
Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan decided to build a mosque in Abu
Dhabi, his capital, to make this place of worship the national symbol but also
an imperishable proof of tolerance and openness to the world for Islam.
Although he died before the end of his construction, his son Khalifa ben Zayed
Al Nahyane, who succeeded him, continued the project and gave his father's name
to the completed building.

Architecture
The Sheikh Zayed Mosque is a blend of tradition and modernity. It
is made in a traditional style of Islamic architecture, with its composition of
columns and arches surmounted by domes. It was realized with techniques of
artisanal sculpture and modern reproduction.
The motifs that adorn the entire mosque were made by a graphic art
company from Milan, Italy.
Plan [edit | change the code]
The religious building includes 4 minarets 107 m high, 82 domes and
1,048 columns.
Structure
Built on a desert terrain of more than 22,000 m2 elevated 9 meters
to dominate the surrounding area, the structure of the mosque is based on more
than 6,000 steel pillars, treated to resist corrosion caused by the saline environment.
These are driven up to 27 m into the ground because of thick layers of sand and
mud that prevent the building from stabilizing well without solid foundations.
This device also allows a good seismic resistant. All required 220,000 m2 of
concrete and 30,000 tons of steel reinforcement.
