A toy that is my age

Literary contest

Often, we walk in the shops, in the middle of shelves, to look at all these toys, without really knowing which one to choose. These stuffed animals with silky fur seem all similar. But sometimes, one of these draws us either by its original form or simply because it is different.

It is exactly because of this last reason that my father chose a little stuffed dog to give it to me when I was just nine months old. He was not a little dog like the others, with a touching look, a smiling face and a soft coat like the other doggies. It was a dog with an oval face, a snout-shaped muzzle, with spiky hairs and eyes that stared at a distant spot. Until very recently, I did not know where his gaze was on each time my eyes met his, a ball was forming deep within me. That's why, at first, when I did my present, I did not really like it. But with the times, I learned to tame it. That's where I imagined joy in his hard look. So this time, when I look at it, I feel happy instead of feeling sad. To go back a few days ago, I imagined the place where his eyes were fixed. It was Japan. The country where it was made. Where it was bought by my father, then transported to China and finally brought to Canada.

This dog has traveled a lot more than most other stuffed animals. But that's not why it's so precious to me. It's because he played an important role in my childhood; that of my favorite toy. During all these years, he has always been with me. And now he has become as alive in my memory. Even if one day we separate, I will never forget this little stuffed dog that is my age.
