Asir
region is one of the thirteen regions of Saudi Arabia defined by the Saudi
regions system. It is located in the far south-west of the Kingdom, bordered to
the east by the regions of Riyadh and Najran, and to the south by the regions
of Jazan, Najran and Yemen, and to the north and west by the Makkah region. The
area rises from sea level by about 2000 meters on average, and it is located on
the heights of the Sarawat, its climate is moderate in the summer of cold
winter and fall heavy rain in winter.
The
region consists of a number of governorates: Khamis Mushait, Bisha, Nemas,
Mahayel, Sarra Obeida, Thalathith, Men of Alama, one of Rafidah, Dhahran of the
South, Balqarn, Mgarda. The capital city is Abha, with a population of
1,715,000 and an area of about 70,000 km 2.
In
winter, the temperature is not less than 17 m. The humidity ranges from 30-50%.
The mountainous areas have a temperature of only 28 m. , The climate is
generally mild and the temperature reaches 3 m in winter, rain falls in the
plains and rises above the highlands.
Abha
City: The city is located on the mountains of Sarawat, the capital of Asir and
its administrative center. The comprehensive development efforts in roads,
gardens and services combined with the beauty of nature and abundance of water.
Some
researchers believe that the city of Abha was known in ancient history as the
name of Abaqa, the place where Abel Balqis was carrying gifts from him to the
Prophet Sulaiman (peace be upon him).
Location
and Surface: Abha occupies an area of 2,200 m above sea level
and is located in the heart of the region, where all the roads linking it to the southwestern regions of the
Kingdom converge. It is bordered to the east and north-east by Khamis Mushayt,
from the northwest by Namas and from the west and southwest by the Mahayel
area.
Climate:
Moderate mostly during the summer months, where the temperature does not exceed
30 m, and cool in winter, not less than 5 m and blowing the rainy monsoon
coming from the Indian Ocean as well as the western winds coming from the Red
Sea, the rain increases in winter , And amounts to 500 mm annually.
Population:
The population of Abha and the surrounding villages is estimated at 180,000,
and the population of the city alone is 110,000. The rest is distributed to the
five centers of the emirate: Shaaf, Al-Suda, Sultan City, Tabb, and Marba. The
centers are located in 427 villages. Most of its population is engaged in
agriculture, trade, grazing and government services.
Education:
The first school established in Abha and the entire Asir region was the Saudi
Primary School in 1355 AH, 1936, but now there are more than seventy schools
for boys and girls serving different stages of education.
A
branch of King Saud University and another of Imam Muhammad Bin Saud Islamic
University was established in Abha, which includes faculties of Shari'a, the
fundamentals of religion, Arabic and social sciences, as well as medicine and
education. In April 1998, a royal decree was issued establishing the King
Khalid University, which included the branches of King Saud University and Imam
Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University. A middle school for teacher education, a
girls' college for girls, a middle school for technical colleges, a secondary
industrial institute and a secondary institute for technical observers and
vocational training centers were established.
Transport
and Communications: Abha is the site of a number of main and branch roads
serving the southern part of the Kingdom. The main roads connecting the city to
other areas and cities are:

4. Wadi
Al-Dawasir Road (350 km).
This is

Health

addition to the health centers, the National Clinic and the malaria and
schistosomiasis prevention centers. The Health Laboratory, the Boys Health
Institute and the Women's Health Institute are an important step on the path of
therapeutic development in Abha.
The
economic activity
Most of
Abha's population works in agriculture and grazing, and the commercial sector
is active while the industrial sector is still very limited.
Agriculture
and irrigation: The abundance of water and fertility of the land has had an
effect in directing the population of the area to agriculture and encouraging
them, and the people of Abha produce all kinds of fruits and grains, especially
wheat. The Ministry of Agriculture is making significant efforts to guide
farmers and provide water by building dams, the most important of which is the
Abha Dam (350 m long, 33 m high, 2.5 m 3) and fresh water pipelines from the
Red Sea to Abha.
Abha
has 300,000 sheep and 500 heads of livestock, and its poultry breeders produce
eggs.
Industry:
The industry in Abha is limited to building materials such as cement, timber,
food as well as maintenance workshops. However, the prosperous future awaits
the city thanks to its diverse resources and comprehensive development plan
especially in the field of industrial education. It established technical
institutes and training centers that can supply the industrial sector with
technical personnel .
Trade:
The commercial sector operates on the basis of the fruits, grain and animal
wealth produced by the land, and the factories produce building materials and
foodstuffs, and the city has a number of central markets that sell basic
materials, as well as banks, restaurants and hotels.
Tourism
and recreation: The nature of Asir with moderate climate, abundant water,
archaeological sites, diverse terrain and financial dependence has become a
difficult and general public, especially a wonderful resort where residents and
tourists enjoy beautiful breeze, beautiful landscapes and dense greenery even
on the mountains as well as paved roads that facilitate access to The farthest
point in the region, the most important area for fun, tourism and recreation is
the Asir National Park.
Asir
National Park: It consists of six sites that have been protected and cared for
by the state so that the visitor can enjoy watching the animals, plants and
fungus. It has all the services, and these sites are:
1. Al Sawdah Park, 23 km away from Abha and
extends to the highest mountains of Asir, equipped with all facilities, hotels,
parking, electricity and others.
2. Dulgan Park, 26 km from the south.
3. Al Qur'a Park, 4 km from Dulgan, 30 km
from Abha.
4. The plateau, 15 km to the south-east of
Abha.
The
other parts of the park are scattered in other governorates of the Asir region.
The gardens within Abha are numerous and spacious and the green areas extend to
about half a million meters.
The
city has a number of castles, towers and fortresses built in the traditional
military style and is currently planning a large number of tourism projects
that will take the city steps on the road to modernization and development.
