Economic and financial situation of the Kingdom

Saudi Arabia is the leading economy in the Middle East and the 20th in the world with a 2015 GDP of USD 653 billion, or 48% of the cumulative GDP of the CCEAG countries. Saudi Arabia has 18% of world oil reserves (2nd in the world) and ranked in 2015 as the world's leading exporter. In 2015, oil exports accounted for 24% of GDP, 73% of export earnings and 73% of state budget revenues. The Saudi government has shown its willingness to reduce its dependence on hydrocarbons with the aim of increasing the contribution of the manufacturing sector to GDP by 20% in 2020, compared to 10% in 2012, while initiating an energy diversification policy. The derived objective is to reduce the unemployment rate of the Saudi population, which fell only very slowly from 12% to 11.5% between 2012 and 2015. In terms of public finances, the Saudi debt remains relatively low despite an upward trend with public debt equivalent to 5.8% of GDP in 2015. Inflation stood at an average of 2.2% in 2015.
