Kakapo or strigops kakapo is a bird endemic to New
Zealand. Recognizable by its greenish yellow plumage and robust body, the
kakapo belongs to the order Psittaciformes, just like the parrot or the macaw.
Night animal, the kakapo whose main feature is not being able to fly, has wings
proportionally too small compared to the rest of his body, and is thus reduced
to move while walking or climbing. Herbivorous, this bird, which feeds mainly
on seeds, fruits and pollen, has long been hunted for its feathers whose hats
were adorned. Today in critical danger of extinction, kakapo would not
represent more than 130 individuals in the wild.
