Syria. Children of war
One in three Syrian children have been
born since the conflict began five years ago and have grown up in a context of
"violence, fear and uprooting," according to a UNICEF report released
on Monday.
Some 3.7 million children have been born
since March 15, 2011, the date of the beginning of the revolt that degenerated
into a civil war, according to a Unicef report released Monday titled "No place for children". Of
these children, 151,000 were born in host countries of Syrian refugees, mainly
Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. In total, the conflict now affects more than 80% of
Syrian children, or 8.4 million, whether in Syria or exiled, according to the
UN agency for children.
"In Syria, violence has become
commonplace, affecting housing, schools, hospitals, clinics, parks, playgrounds
and places of worship," said Peter Salama, regional director for the
Middle East and North Africa. He estimates that seven million children live in
poverty. The report also lists 1,500 "serious violations" perpetrated
in 2015 against Syrian children, 60% of whom were victims of "explosive
weapons used in populated areas". More than a third of these children were
killed at school or while going to school.
15,000 unaccompanied children separated
from their parents
In neighboring countries, the number of
refugees is nearly ten times higher today than in 2012 and half of them are
children, of whom more than 15,000 are unaccompanied and separated from their
parents. "Five years after (the beginning of) the war, millions of
children have grown up too fast," says Salama. They "continue to drop
out of school, and many of them are forced to work, while girls get married
early".
According to Unicef, belligerents
continue to recruit children at an increasingly low age. At the beginning of
the conflict, it was mostly boys between 15 and 17 years old. "However,
since 2014, all parties have recruited children at much younger ages," the
report says. More than half of them were under the age of 15 in 2015.
UNICEF estimates that $ 1.4 billion in
funding is needed in 2016 to help children regain their dignity and well-being.
She regrets, however, that she has received only 6% of the required funding.
