The arrival in Bangkok is enough to disconcert: the motorway bridges pass over narrow streets, skyscrapers dominate the small Buddhist temples, the giant commercials are shading the street shops ... We feel Quick: Bangkok, more than any other, is a city that deserves. Tentacular, polluted, noisy, suffocating, Krung Thep, the "City of Angels", is also a great concentrate of Asia, colors, energy, traditions ...
Paul Morand already said in 1926 that it "reads flat, but with difficulty". Here is Bangkok: a city without relief, built 1 m above sea level, nestled in the meanders of Chao Phraya, crisscrossed by canals (khlong) before being cut by streets (the first in 1862 !) as wide as highways and from where emerge, according to the districts, a forest of chedi (stupas) or skyscrapers. Because the development of this tropical megapolis, never colonized, operated from west to east. At the river's edge: Rattanakosin, the old city, and its treasures (Wat Pho, Grand Palace), Banglamphu and Khao San Road, the backpackers' rendez-vous. To the north, Dusit, the city of the nineteenth century, royal power and south, Bangrak, the legations. To the east, the modern city (Siam Square, Pratunam, Silom, etc.), which extends infinitely on the endless avenue Sukhumvit.
Everywhere, customs and traditions have mingled with the 21st
century. : tuk-tuk farting or skytrain? Bubbling markets or trendy shopping
centers? Pad Thai or scented gastronomy? Gargote by the river or restaurant on
the roof of a skyscraper? Puppet show or trendy lounge?
By digging a canal where the meander of the river is the tightest, Rama I created, together with its capital, an artificial island, protected by a wall of 7 km and 15 watchtowers. Rattanakosin, or "home of the Emerald Buddha" (the sacred statue is kept in the Royal Chapel) was the name of the kingdom from 1782 to 1932. Today it refers to the "old" downtown Bangkok, on the edge of Chao Phraya. The Grand Palace and Wat Pho are crowded with the crowd, as are ministries, universities and other institutions.
National Museum
The country's first museum, founded in 1874 by King Rama V. Decades of conservation, later acquisition, the place has become a unique panorama of Thai art and history. Among its treasures: the inscription of King Ram Khamhaeng (1292), classified in the "Memory of the World" register of Unesco for its value of historical document, but also because it accounts for the invention of the alphabet Thai.
Dusit
The first king to travel to Europe, Rama V (1868-1910) returned fascinated and began to turn Bangkok into a Western-style capital: the Dusit district, with its solemn arteries, is the expression of this desire. In architectural and decorative terms, this is evidenced by the Ratchadamnoen ("Progrès-Social") avenue, the Italianian Ananda Samakhom, the Benchamabophit temple and its Carrara marble ... Any visit by Dusit would not be complete. without the Vimanmek Palace, considered the largest golden teak structure in the world.
Chinatown
A district as old as the city, because it is here, downstream and outside the walls, that was moved in 1782 the small community of Chinese merchants living on the site of Rattanakosin. If the opium dens, gambling dens and brothels of Sampheng Lane are no more, the teeming alleyways, the smoky temples, the herbalists, the fragrant markets, the street gargoyles (go there at nightfall) ) make Bangkok Chinatown a neighborhood apart.
Siam Square
Here is the beating heart of the modern city, where all-Bangkok is hurrying! Aerial metro, giant shopping malls , trendy boutiques, fast-food chains, contemporary art museum, speakers spitting an international pop ... everything is there, ranking Bangkok among the great Asian. The modern city has sprung here, around Siam Square, and now stretches for kilometers to the east and Sukhumvit.
Jim Thompson's House
... where we imagine, the time of a visit, the life of old! The pavilions of this beautiful teak house were brought from various parts of the country by Jim Thompson, an American who revived Thai silk. Statues, antique furniture, lacquered screens ... both decorations of the house and precious pieces of this museum of Asian art.
Bangrak
In the nineteenth century, foreign embassies settled on the edge of the Chao Phraya, downstream of the Grand Palace, which could easily be reached by boat. Bangrak emerges, on the river side (the agitation resumes in the east, around Silom), an old-fashioned charm, with its colonial-style mansions, its lush gardens ... The history of the district is due to the impressive variety of places of worship: mosque, Catholic cathedral, Portuguese church, Tamil temple, and even a boat-shaped Buddhist pagoda!
Suan Lumphini
It is hard to imagine that this large park was, at its creation in the 1920s, outside the city! Named after the birthplace of the Buddha, in Nepal, it is, in the heart of this financial district, a real place of life: cross Tai-chi lovers, sportsmen of all kinds, picnickers, families ride...
Wat Arun
It is at dusk that you have to visit the "temple of the Dawn", when the groups have passed for a long time and the sun caresses an orange light thousands of tesserae of multicolored ceramic. Its central prang , 86 m high and symbolizing Mount Meru, seems almost incandescent.
Thonburi
After the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767, the capital of the
kingdom was established in Thonburi, before being moved again to Rattanakosin
in 1782. The right bank of the Chao Phraya was then somewhat neglected ...
hence this network of khlong still very dense, these old wooden houses, these
gardens, and this life (partly on the water) which seems a thousand leagues
from that of the opposite bank! To get off the beaten track, discover another
Bangkok, you have to take a boat "long-tail" (collective or not) and
browse at random channels Thonburi.
Rattanakosin / BanglamphuThe historical and spiritual heart of Bangkok, Rattanakosin is the focal point of its grandeur: the Grand Palace and its golden reflections, Wat Pho and its flight of chedi ... All around, universities, venerable institutions and broad arteries almost impassable: only the banks of the river animate the places, with their restaurants and their markets. Change of scenery to the north, to Banglamphu and around the famous "Khao San Road", a meeting place for travelers from all over the world: there are plenty of hotels and budget restaurants, bars, clothing stalls ... Just a stone's throw away, the street Phra Athit and its small cafes attract bohemian bangkok.
Thewet / Dusit
With its guesthouses and terraces on the water, the peaceful little district of Thewet lives facing the river. To the east, Dusit displays a 19th century European stamp, desired by Rama V after his travels in the West. Bordering tree-lined avenues, calm but without soul, official buildings, ministries and royal residences make it the center of political power. However, the park Dusit and its palace in blond teak charm quaint attract visitors. Towards the south, Bangkok's bustle revolves around Democracy Monument and Ratchadamnoen Klang, lined with portraits of the king and visiting heads of state.
Chinatown / Phahurat
Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Chinatown, a frenzied neighborhood where secret lanes with taiist temples, herbalism and bustling markets mingle. One gets lost with delight, following the crowd between the boutique houses of Sampeng Lane, before entering the self Itsaranuphap, lined with stalls with mysterious victuals and heady smells. At the heart of the rumor, the street Yaowarat lights up in the evening with giant ideograms and smiles of smoking stalls. To the west emanate Phahurat's thousand and one scents, spice stalls and the colorful market of the small Indian community.
Siam Square / Pratunam / Sukhumvit
A real shopping empire, modern Bangkok is home to gigantic malls around Siam Square, served by a futuristic Skytrain. To the north, the Baiyoke Tower, an effective landmark, signals the bustling district of Pratunam. In this universe of unbridled consumption, here and there are still a serene temple, traditional teak houses, altars with centuries-old rites ... To the east, lined with sparkling glass towers, the interminable Sukhumvit street, haunt of expatriates, is home to an intense nightlife. It hides, in the depths of its self (alleys) with little village tunes, charming restaurants.
Silom / Bangrak
By the time Bangkok wakes up, Lumphini Park is already teeming with a crowd of sportsmen. Later, it's all about Bangrak and Silom Street, the business and financial center, which vibrate with a hectic animation. As night falls, office workers and vendors make way for tourists and night owls, Saladaeng's well-known restaurants and Patpong's hotspot. To the west, past Charoen Krung Street, the former quarter of foreigners (nineteenth century), which just barely disturb the shadow of gigantic luxury hotels, opens on the river: colonial buildings, embassies, mosques and churches.
Thonburi
It is by the waters that it is necessary to approach Thonburi, ephemeral capital of the kingdom, from 1767 to 1782, on the right bank of Chao Phraya. From Bangrak or Rattanakosin, ferries cross the river in a spectacular ballet, docking at these quieter banks, where temples - including the splendid Wat Arun - and restaurants on the water are scattered. In the back, a myriad of channels ( khlong ) irrigates Thonburi (as Bangkok in the nineteenth century), which is sailed in a "long-tail" boat. Then parading the visions of a life on the khlong elsewhere gone: wooden houses on stilts, boats loaded with fruit, fishermen on their pontoons ...
Thai cuisine
One of the most famous and varied in the world! Fresh products (lots of fish and seafood in Bangkok), herbs and spices, accompanied by rice. Few desserts, but fruits with wonderful flavors: pineapple, rambutan, durian, mangosteen, mango ...
The essentials - Pad Thai : sautéed soy noodles, shrimp and peanuts. Tom yum kung : shrimp soup with lemongrass. Khao pat : Thai fried rice. Kaeng khiao wan nuea : green beef curry. Som tum : Spicy salad of green papaya.

Throughout the streets, open-air restaurants, where you can concoct on a handful of square meters all kinds of delicious and inexpensive dishes: kebabs, soups, glutinous rice, etc.
