The suborder Anisoptera includes families of dragonflies

The anisoptera (Anisoptera) is a suborder that groups the insects of the order odonates which are the different families of dragonflies. There are more than 3,000 species in 344 genera worldwide, and 325 species in 70 genera in North America.

They measure between 25 and 90 mm, depending on the species. They have two pairs of wings with independent movements, which allow them to fly at high speed, to make the place, and even to fly backwards. The pair of hind wings is wider than the front ones. When they are at rest, they post their spreading wings on each side of the body.

They have three pairs of legs in front of the chest that help them grab prey, or stick to the plants they use as perches. They have on their heads a pair of very short antennas placed under the large compound eyes that give them a very piercing view. The color of the eyes, the patterns on the wings and body, and the flight period are some clues that can help determine which species of dragonfly is observed.

Their identification is often difficult because many species change color as they mature. Females and males often have different colors, and some change color depending on the temperature.

Anisoptera are diurnal and therefore active during the day. They frequent places where there are marshes, the edge of ponds and rivers, and places with a small body of water suitable for egg-laying.

They are carnivorous insects that feed on live insects that they catch in flight. Males usually have a territory that they patrol and defend against intruders.

After reproduction. The female can lay up to 600 eggs. Some species pierce a hole in the stem of a plant to deposit the eggs, others lay the eggs under water by plunging the tip of the abdomen under water, and some simply abandon the eggs to the area.

The anisoptera pass through different metamorphoses before becoming an adult dragonfly. The egg becomes an enlarged aquatic larva feeding on larvae and aquatic insects. When she reaches a certain size, she moults, and the skin of her back bursts to give way to a larger larva.

The larva will spend the winter under water, to resume its activity the following spring. The larva then becomes a nymph, who will climb up a stem to get out of the water. After a while, her skin will tear again and the dragonfly comes out to take flight. Adult life of dragonflies is short-lived, since they die shortly after mating and egg-laying.
