THE ELEPHANT OF ASIA

Physical description

The elephant is the largest mammal in Asia, although it is smaller than its African counterpart. The animal can reach 3 meters high and weigh up to 5 tons. Like the African elephant, it has long tusks and a long trunk that ends in a single lip. His ears are shorter and he has two rounded bumps at the top of his skull. It is rather brown.

His place of life

As the name implies, this elephant lives in Asia, in Indochina, Sri Lanka, Sumatra, India, Thailand, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Vietnam. This elephant species enjoys dense shaded forests, where water and food are abundant.

His diet

The Asian elephant is an herbivorous animal. He needs about 220 kg of herbs and tender plants to survive on a daily basis. It can also be said that he is a vegetarian because he eats a large variety of plants, also eats bark. Without question, he is a big drinker of water. He also spends most of his time walking in the forest in search of water or food.

His reproduction

The Asian elephant reaches sexual maturity between the ages of 8 and 12 years. The timing of mating takes place all year round. The gestation period lasts 20 to 21 months. But there can only be one baby elephant per litter: a baby weighing a hundred kilograms!

His life expectancy

The life of an Asian elephant is close to that of men: between 50 and 70 years. Some individuals, however, live to 100 years of age.

His shout

The Asian elephant has the same cries as other elephants. The screams of the elephant are called baret, barrage, barrit or barrage.

Particular signs

The Asian elephant's trunk ends with one finger, against two opposite fingers in the African species.
