THE ADVANTAGES OF FRIENDSHIP
Cicero was one of the
greatest thinkers of the Roman Empire. He was an outstanding speaker, lawyer,
politician, linguist and author. It is still quoted today for its clear prose
and practical wisdom.
For example, here is what he
wrote about friends: "Friendship increases happiness and relieves misery,
doubles joys and divides sorrows. He understood the double benefit of having
friends over the course of his life.
Almost a millennium ago,
King Solomon also wrote about the value of friends. In the book of
Ecclesiastes, we read: "Two are better than one, because they get a good
salary from their work. For if they fall, one raises his companion; but woe to
him who is alone and who falls without having a second to raise him up! (4.9.10.)
Life without friends certainly makes our stay here lonely and heavy.
This famous Roman and this
Jewish king were right: friends are important. Our friends serve as confidants,
counselors and helpers to carry our burdens.
Think of your friends. Have
you recently neglected the people God has given you to share your joys and
sorrows? If so, try to commune with one of your friends this week. Remember
that "[two] are better than one" because a friend can double our joys
and divide our sentences.
