ABU DHABI: AN EMIRAT, A CITY, AND THE CAPITAL OF THE E.A.U
A bit jealous of the success of Dubai, the capital of the neighboring emirate, Abu Dhabi, hitherto turned to oil and administrative affairs is waking up and is working hard to become, tomorrow, the flagship destination of the region. It must be said that the sleeping beauty does everything to be noticed. After the Sorbonne, Abu Dhabi borrows the Louvre, at least its name, but provides for three other prestigious museums and launches ambitious architectural projects that will complement the Emiraties Palace and the Great Mosque, the two windows of Abu Dhabi.
 SITUATION AND POPULATION
Surrounded by Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman and the Emirate of Dubai, Abu Dhabi (father of the gazelle in Arabic) was originally an island in the Persian Gulf that became a city, then an emirate and finally the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
The population of the emirate is estimated at 1.5 million people, half of whom live in the city of Abu Dhabi. Most of them are immigrant workers, since the Emirans represent only 13 to 15% of the population.
HISTORY OF THE ABU DHABI EMIRATE
Founded in 1760 by the Bedouin tribe of Bani Yas, Abu Dhabi first merged with the Emirate of Dubai, then established itself as an autonomous emirate in 1833 under the authority of al Nahyan, Dubai remaining under the authority of the al Maktoum, another Bani Yas clan. From 1900, the emirate gained importance and became one of the world's leading pearl export centers. Yet, as in Dubai, the pearl-based economy collapses in the 1930s with the invasion of Japanese cultured pearls. Oil is discovered from 1958, but, too timid, the reigning Sheikh does not reinvest these new revenues and Abu Dhabi does not develop. He will be thrown out of the throne in 1966 by his brother, Sheikh Zayid bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who will head the emirate, then will be the founder of the United Arab Emirates in December 1971, and its president until his death in 2004 A visionary, he makes the emirate of Abu Dhabi, who lacks everything, the richest of the seven emirates. Since 1970, the currencies of oil exports have made it possible to launch development programs (roads, schools, hospitals, electrification).
But after giving priority to this unique sector generating currencies, since 1980, the government is aware of the ephemeral nature of oil resources and the need to diversify the economy by developing other sectors such as industry and industry. Agriculture…. Despite a more diversified economy than other Gulf emirates (Qatar and Kuwait), oil exports still account for two-thirds of the emirate's economy, while Dubai; the neighboring emirate has been able to reduce the share of crude oil to 6% of its GDP thanks to its import-export, industrial zones and free zones, tourism, finance and construction programs.

HISTORY OF THE CITY OF ABU DHABI
Before 1958, and the discovery of black gold, Abu Dhabi was just a small pearl fishing village. It all began when, between 1760 and 1761, Bedouins discovered a water reserve on the island of Abu Dhabi, giving birth to a village of a few houses on the island, which in 1793 became the capital of Bani Yas . Qasr al-Hosn was built in 1761 to protect this source of water originally from Abu Dhabi. The Qasr al-Hosn or Fort White, one of the few historical relics of the city, will be the official palace of the ruling family al Nahyan until 1966, but it is today in the shadow of buildings whose higher is the Adia Tower (200 m), a glass and steel building inaugurated in 2007 and headquarters of oil revenues. Indeed, where the Bedouins had erected their huts, among some palm trees and a well where they drank their dromedaries, is currently the Corniche, a beautiful walk of several kilometers, lined with imposing buildings, towers and mosques and rhythmic by the presence of squares, landscaped parks, cafes, etc ...

 WHAT TO DO ABU DHABI
Even if Abu Dhabi does not know the traffic jams and the excessiveness of Dubai, apart from the Corniche, the city center is not very interesting (especially in periods of heatwave) and has few tourist sites, except the Bedouin Village, the Emirates Heritage Village and the Petroleum Exhibition.

The Corniche is one of the attractions of Abu Dhabi and, although quiet, an entertainment area with its many cafes and shopping centers. Along a path parallel to the waterfront many activities are possible and the landscaped gardens are beautiful. A pavement connects the cornice to the pier, where you can spend, in an Arab atmosphere, a pleasant evening in one of the many cafes and shisha bars where French nationals are welcomed thanks to the success of the Sorbonne-Abu Dhabi, a French-language mixed university created after a cooperation agreement between Paris IV and the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Research. However for fun it is better to go to Dubai. On the other hand, to live in peace, nothing beats Abu Dhabi, capital of the emirate and United Arab Emirates, whose ambition is also to become the cultural capital of the Middle East as evidenced by the project of the island of Saadiyat with its future museums including the Louvre and the Guggenheim. An exhibition is dedicated to him in the salons of the grandiose Hotel Emirates Palace, at the end of the cornice.
If it's useless to walk around the city center, it's nice to enjoy the beaches of the Emirates Palace or the green of the al-Ghazal Abu Dhabi Sand Golf, to discover the harbor and Dhows shipyards or the souks, but in the late afternoon, do not miss the rendez-vous with the emirati and their families in shopping centers like the Marina Mall or the Abu Dhabi Mall. You will meet there, covered with their luxurious black abaya (traditional clothing), the beautiful emiriennes who come to indulge in their favorite passion, shopping in the Mall.

 MAJOR PROJECTS
While Dubai innovated economically and architecturally, Abu Dhabi, the political capital, remained calm and conservative. It is now in direct competition with Dubai.
Indeed, many development projects are being set up in Abu Dhabi, such as the continued development of the Corniche, with the construction of hotels and luxury resorts, or the central market site, which will replace the former souk. .
Around Abu Dhabi, luxury residential and tourist complexes in the emirate's coastal regions are emerging as well as new business centers with shops and residences, such as in Reem Island, the largest development project real estate in Abu Dhabi, where the University Paris-Sorbonne-Abu Dhabi will settle in its final building.
But the most ambitious project remains the development of the island of Saadiyat whose major asset is the "cultural district" including several world-famous museums, among which the Louvre and the Guggenheim, but also the Center of the Living Arts and the Museum of the Sea (The Emirates Palace hosts an exhibition dedicated to this cultural project).
The most futuristic project is that of Masdar: a fully autonomous city in electricity consumption using solar energy and wind turbines. With new means of transport, this green city will be without cars, so without CO2 emissions. The city of the future 100% ecological. (See our special page)

EMIRATES PALACE A PALACE FOR EMIRS AT ABU DHABI
Established by the ruling family to host heads of state and official delegations visiting the United Arab Emirates, the Emirates Palace is the hotel of all superlatives.
At the end of the cornice, the Emirates Palace is monumental, with its hotel capacity, its design, its reception rooms (5 of which exhibit the presentation of the "Cultural District" project on the island of Saadiyat), its auditorium (intended for operas), its 2800-seat ballroom, and its two pool areas at the end of each wing. The lobby is huge, the Pharaonic atrium under its mosaic cupola, and the 114 other cupolas are all richly decorated. Despite the profusion of gilding and marble, if you get close to kitsch sometimes, you never fall in bad taste.
At the Emirates Palace the 302 rooms are all identical (only the view differs), and the 92 huge suites, are only silk, crystal, gold and silver. A true palace of the Tales of Thousand and One Nights.
Five restaurants offer a taste of Italian, Lebanese and Iranian cuisine, as well as delicious seafood and an international buffet, as well as two restaurants in the East and West pools. In the evening, the Caviar Bar, Al Majlis or Havana Club will satisfy the most demanding.
Designed to welcome the prestigious guests of the Emirate, the Kempinski Emirates Palace is more than just a hotel, this city in the city is the hotel's reference point for the emirate, the lighthouse and the Abu Dhabi showcase. (See our report)

 THE GREAT MOSQUE SHEIKH ZAYED
The most famous of the 900 mosques in Abu Dhabi, and the largest in the emirate, is the Sheikh Zayed Mosque which has just been completed. On an architectural level the building is huge and sumptuous with its four minarets and 80 domes of different sizes. The decoration is inspired by the architecture of the Muslim world, especially Moroccan and Turkish for mosaics, but also Indian since it uses white marble encrusted with semi-precious stones.

Part of the monument is accessible to non-Muslims, who, subject to the respect of a dress code, can admire the thousand columns inlaid with precious stones, the interior mosaics glazed with gold, the gold and crystal chandeliers and the largest Iranian carpet of the world.
