Context of research
Cultural traditions
and beliefs guide the role, positioning and involvement of fathers in the
family. In most parts of the world, the identity of a child is intrinsically
linked to that of his father, although small islands of matrilineal communities
contrast with this generalized trend. In several countries, the biological role
of men is considered more important than their social and cultural role of
father. The nature and degree of father involvement depend on economic activities
and cultural practices, including forms of marriage and cohabitation, proximity
between spouses, co-operation and contribution to subsistence, level of
material wealth7 and the presence of other members of the family. Models evolve
with ecological and historical roles and relationships within cultures.
In
different sociocultural contexts, fathers may be authoritarian, caring, caring,
affectionate, distant or completely detached.8 Between these socially-guided
themes and guidelines built throughout history, fathers continue to live their
lives everywhere. in the world, fulfilling their responsibilities to family
members with varying degrees of commitment and official accountability.
Recently, the state has emerged as an important stakeholder in family relations
(for example, child care and education are now the subject of policy in the
Scandinavian countries); this breakthrough emphasized the father's involvement
in children's lives.
Key research questions
Contemporary family
studies require a deeper and more detailed exploration of the experience and
evolution of fatherhood. The whole range of different types of research could
shed some light on fatherhood, from large-scale demographic studies of family life
to individual case studies of a particular father. Some key questions are
listed below:
What are the universal
and variable conceptions of paternity?
What are the roles and
relationships of fathers in different societies?
How is the subjective
experience of fathers in various cultures described?
What can be learned
from ethnographic reports on fathers obtained in different ecological contexts?
What are the models of
involvement of the father with the child in different cultures?
How has the presence
or absence of the father in the modern world changed with technological
progress and social networking?

Today, in many parts of the world, many fathers are
moving beyond their role as providers to become more involved in caring for and
raising children. Changes in attitudes, timetables, trends and the media have
supported and even initiated some of these transformations. As caregivers,
fathers educate, care for, feed, wash and actively protect children. These
trends imply greater negotiability in parenting roles within families from
different cultural communities. That said, countries such as Russia8 and Brazil
report strong resistance to any change in the traditional roles of men and
women; and in the United Kingdom, the "modern" father is more an
ideal than a reality. In India, South Africa and Russia, where other family
members, such as the grandmother, are available for the care and upbringing of
children, the role of the father has changed more slowly. An international
study has shown that, despite an increased involvement of fathers in the care
and upbringing of children in educated families, the mother still has primary
responsibility for it.
