Symbiosis in the animal kingdom

Some animals live a symbiotic relationship

Symbiosis is the process by which two different species of animals help each other to help each other survive. A symbiotic relationship can become vital for one or both species and thus become dependent on the other. A good example is the bacterium that helps digestion in humans. Without these bacteria, we become sick.

Symbiosis can also be just for a matter of utility without being vital to the animal. The clownfish helps the anemone by attacking the butterfly fish that eat them and by attracting other fish as food for it. The anemone that can kill or paralyze the majority of fish, keeps them away from the eggs that the clownfish has laid near it. They help each other, but if one dies, the other will survive anyway.

There are many forms of symbiosis, some direct like the bacterium that helps digestion, and the crocodile who gets his teeth cleaned by a bird that treats pieces caught in the mouth of it. They both derive an advantage, one is relieved of pieces of food taken between his teeth, the other an easy meal.

If only one of the animals benefits from the relationship, it is no longer a symbiosis and may even be parasitism if it harms the other. It is therefore necessary that the two species derive some benefit from not eating or allowing the other animal to do so.

We can observe symbiotic relationships of all kinds of animal breeds such as sharks, anemones, bacteria, birds ... but not all cases are as striking as the crocodile that does not eat it. bird that cleans his teeth. If one animal benefits from the other, it is more opportunism.

Do not take the domestication of chickens for a symbiotic relationship for example. The hen is not free to go, she is captive and the property of the breeder, so it is not a relationship of symbiosis.
