independence day
In Jordan, the sun
shines most of the year. Precipitation occurs from late autumn to mid-spring.
In recent years, they have been decreasing. They are almost non-existent in
Aqaba, in the South and in the desert. The best time to discover Jordan is in
the spring (March-May), when the country becomes green and is covered with
wildflowers. In places, even the desert is lined with multicolored corollas.
Fall (Sept.-Oct.) Does not lack charm. The summer heat gives way to a milder
weather, which lends itself particularly well to idleness on the terrace of a
café or an al fresco dinner. In winter (Dec-Feb), Jordan shivers. It happens
that Amman and Petra find themselves in the rain, even in the snow. The
advantage of this season is that it attracts fewer tourists (except Christmas
and New Year's Day). In Aqaba and on the edge of the Dead Sea, the weather
remains pleasant all year round.
Choose a hotel
Between the family
pension and the 5-star palace, the range of hotels is very wide in Amman and in
major tourist sites like Petra. Elsewhere, the choice may be considerably
restricted. However, you will still be able to find at least one establishment
of 2 or 3 stars.
Avoid out of category
hotels. In the rooms, rudimentary and dirty, sheets and pillowcases are not
provided. In addition, all extras, including showers in common bathrooms, air
conditioning in summer and heating in winter, are generally charged extra.
Usually, 1 or 2 star
hotels provide sheets, a fan, sometimes air conditioning. and breakfast. They
provide some degree of cleanliness and offer access to shared showers.
The 3-star hotel
offers better equipped rooms, including a TV, air conditioning (or heating,
essential in winter), minibar, telephone and private bathroom.
The 4-stars are often
old 5-stars. In general, they lack nothing. They have a swimming pool or beach,
gardens, spas, sports facilities, car rental agencies, bookstores, craft shops,
as well as several bars and restaurants.
Tough budget advice:
some 1 or 2 star hotels have dormitories, as well as triple or quadruple rooms.
In summer, some allow their guests to sleep in beds on their rooftop terraces.
In nature reserves,
the RSCN manages lodges or resthouses, often designed according to ecological
standards and located in a protected environment. Accommodation varies from
simple bungalow to tent or tent bungalow. Compared to the simplicity of the
offer, prices may seem high. Much of the money raised goes back to the village
supported by the reserve. If you want to escape the cities or forget the ruins for
a while, treat yourself to a night in one of these unspoilt places.
Prices are negotiated
in almost all hotels, especially in the low season (June-Sept.) And for long
stays. Modest institutions are particularly flexible on this issue.
All charge a 16% surcharge
- check whether the advertised price reflects this or not. During the busiest
periods (Sept.-Oct., Christmas and New Year, March-mid-May), booking is
essential.
Most hotels offer 2
prizes: one for Jordanians and the other for foreigners. They can however apply
the 1st to foreigners residing in Jordan. If this is your case, you will simply
have to present your resident card. Ditto in some museums and in Petra, where
the reduction is worth it!
Camping
Rummana, where is the
only campsite worthy of the name, is located in the Dana Nature Reserve. It has
20 large tents equipped with mattresses and blankets, 2 bathrooms (each with 4
showers) and a common Bedouin style tent. Visitors can rent gas stoves.
The site opens from
March to Oct. Check rates and availability on the Internet (www.rscn.org.jo).
Single / double / triple / quad tent costs 44/50/64/74 DJ (plus 8% tax); this
rate includes breakfast
You can also camp on
the grounds of other reserves. Some like the Aljun Forest Reserve have
permanent facilities, including tented bungalows, canvas bungalows mounted on a
wooden platform.
Camping is allowed
everywhere in Jordan. However, the choice remains limited due to the lack of
closure, difficulties in accessing water and the fact that some sites are
littered with rubbish.
The Wadi Rum desert
is a big hit with independent campers. If you want to win an unforgettable
memory of your stay in Jordan, spend a night in a Bedouin camp. The comfort is
rudimentary. In general, you will have common showers, a campfire or warm
stove, and a mattress in a stuffy tent or outside, under the stars.
Similar camps exist
elsewhere, for example, at the Wadi Musa, near Petra.
