Yasser Arafat: express biography

Born in Cairo, the deceased Palestinian leader had seen his country from childhood. First by the English.

From armed struggle, he had gone on to negotiate, then to preside, an embryo of a state from which he would never see complete independence.

- Yasser Arafat was born on August 24, 1929 in Cairo, to a Palestinian family of textile traders.

- At the age of five, he is sent to live with his uncle in Jerusalem, then under British rule.

- At 19, he dropped out of school to take up arms in the war between the Arab countries and the new State of Israel.

- After the defeat, he returns to Cairo University, where he animates Palestinian student movements.

- He then exiles himself to Kuwait, where he founded in 1958 Fatah, a secret organization of resistance.

- Two years after the defeat in the Six Day War (1967), he becomes leader of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), to which he prints a much harder line than the one hitherto dictated by the countries Arab.

- Arafat makes the Jordan-based PLO a powerful organization with its own armed forces. For Israel, he becomes the man to be shot down and is forced to move constantly between Jordan, Lebanon and Tunis, where he sets up his headquarters.

- In 1988, before the United Nations in Geneva, Arafat announced that the PLO renounced the armed struggle. This is the beginning of the process leading up to the Oslo Accords in 1993.

- First leader of the new Palestinian Authority, Arafat is elected president in 1996.

- In 1994, he won the Nobel Peace Prize, jointly with Yitzhak Rabin, then prime minister, and Shimon Peres, Israel's foreign minister.
