one of the most respected Saudi religious figures in Saudi Arabia. Born in 1925
in Unaizah (Saudi Arabia), he memorized the Koran from an early age. He was
among others the pupil of Sheikh Abd al-Rahman ibn Nasir as-Sadi, as well as'
Abd al-Aziz ibn Abdullah Ibn Baz and Muhammad ash-Shanqitî. During his years of
study, he became known for his knowledge in fiqh (jurisprudence), an area in
which he wrote several books.
Ibn Uthaymin: Biography
Born in Unaizah in the Al Qasim
region of Saudi Arabia on March 9, 1925 (27 Ramadan 1347 of the Muslim
calendar), he comes from Banu Tamim ibn Murr of Nejd.
When he started teaching, a large
number of students of all nationalities studied with him. His notoriety grows
by his interpretation, his explanations and his points of view in the Moslem
religion. He is considered by Salafis to be among the most learned who served
Islam and his community (Ummah). They consider that Uthaymin's religious
verdicts (fatwa) are based on the salafs (pious predecessors) methodology and
highlighted from the Qur'an and the Sunnah, the Muslim tradition. He has fifty
books to his credit and many of his books have been translated into French, in
the field of belief, jurisprudence and hadith.
Ibn Uthaymin: Positions
He allegedly issued a fatwa in
which he explains that the practice of caesarean section could be a plot
against Islam that would make pregnancy dangerous or even impossible for women.
Ibn Uthaymin: Distinctions
He gave lectures in the mosque of
Mecca for thirty-five years. He taught fiqh (jurisprudence), aqida (belief),
tafsir (exegesis of the Qur'an), hadith as well as the books of Ibn Taymiyya
and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya. Before dying, he also taught at the Islamic Faculty
of Imam Muhammad ibn Saud, and was also a member of the Committee of Senior
Scholars of Saudi Arabia. He was also the imam and khatib of the Great Mosque
of Unayzah.
Uthaymin is considered by Salafis
as one of the most influential scholars of the last part of the twentieth
century, along with Muhammad Nassiruddin al-Albani and Abdul'Aziz ibn 'Abdillah
ibn Baz and received the King Faisal International Prize on 8 February 1994 for
his dedication to teaching.
What also made his success was
his relationship with his students to whom he spoke regularly. He died on
January 5, 2001 and was buried in the Mecca Al-Adil cemetery, next to famous
scholars including Ibn Baz. 500,000 people attended the funeral prayer (salat
janaza), with 1650 security agents deployed on this occasion.
