7-point ladybug
Ladybug
ladybug dandelion macro
The 7-point ladybug, nicknamed "beast with
good god" is a small beetle well known in our gardens, which has a
reputation for happiness. But it is especially a very useful animal, which rids
our plants of their aphids. This ladybug, as its name indicates 7 points, which
allows to identify and differentiate it from the Asian ladybug is an invasive
species and is even one of its predators.
NAME: 7-point ladybug (Coccinella septempunctata)
CLASS: Insects
ORDER: Coleoptera
FAMILY: Coccinellidae
SIZE: 5 to 8 minutes
WEIGHT: 15 mg
LIFETIME: 1 to 2 years
DISTRIBUTION: Whole Europe
HABITAT: Garden, parks, meadows, ....
FEEDING: Insectivore: When it feeds only aphids it
is said that it is aphidiphage.
REPRODUCTION: Ladybugs lay 100 to 400 eggs, and
larvae hatch after 7 days.
PREDATORS: Praying Mantises, Bugs.
Life cycle of a ladybug
Everyone knows the adult ladybug, globose and red
with black dots. More rare are those who know his eggs, his larva or his nymph.
We propose in this article to discover its life cycle and the different stages
of its development.
Like all beetles, the ladybug performs a complete
metamorphosis, that is, the larva and the adult are not alike. Thus, to pass
from the larval stage to the adult stage, the development of the insect goes
through a stage of transformation in the form of nymph.
Mating adult females lay oval, orange-yellow eggs
that measure on the order of 1 to 2 mm (left of the diagram). They are often
grouped together and the number of eggs per egg is variable according to the
species (generally about twenty to a hundred).
4 to 5 days later (at a temperature of 20 ° C), one
larva leaves each egg. The ladybug larva, like all insects, has an external
skeleton that is not extensible (the cuticle). To grow, she is forced to
separate. This is the moulting phenomenon. The larvae will moult 3 times, so
there are 4 larval stages in the ladybug (top of the diagram), each stage
having a duration of 4 to 5 days (at 20 ° C always). Throughout this period,
the ladybug consumes aphids to ensure growth, it is said to be aphidiphagous.
At the end of the fourth larval stage, while its
size and weight are at their maximum, the larva is immobilized, sticks its
abdomen to the back of a leaf and curves to gradually form a nymph (right of
the diagram), in which the adult ladybug will form.
After a few days, a new adult ladybug will emerge
from this nymph and will breed in turn, completing the ladybug's life cycle.
In your garden, from the beginning of spring, you
can observe the adults of the last season who are warming themselves in the sun
after their long winter sleep (wintering). Subsequently, with a little
attention, it is also possible to observe the larvae and nymphs, and why not to
promote their presence ..
