Pet: the dog
The dog is part of the family Canidae is a domestic mammal,
close to the wolf (he can be likened to his cousin). The dog is not, for now,
considered a species in itself but rather as a subspecies of Canis lupus. Dog
and wolf are thus of the same species. The old scientific names of the dog,
"Canis canis" or "Canis familiaris", are no longer
relevant.
It is also an appellation for a different species of canines like
Spethos and Atelocynus, or even rodents of the Cynomys type (prairie dog).
There are many breeds (species) of dogs. More than three quarters
of those recognized to date are very old and derived from natural selection on
morphology, combined with an artificial selection on behavior (some examples:
Berger de Brie, Siberian Husky). The final quarter is the result of a modern
artificial selection (ex: Golden Retriever, German Shepherd); this is often the
most popular because fashioned at the convenience of the man.
History:
Domestication of the dog began around 15000 BC. in hunter groups.
In parallel, the horse will be domesticated by groups of nomads in 3000 BC.
In ancient times, dogs were used to fight (eg Irish Wolfhound), or
to produce meat and were also supports of beliefs and rituals typically
religious.
Then, under the Roman Empire, they were pets, herders and used as a
hunting tool.
Physical characteristics :
The dog has nearly 300 bones, 80 more than the man. The number is
different according to the races. It has a very powerful jaw. The rottweiler
can reach 149 kg / cm2, while the German shepherd can exert a force of 108 kg /
cm2. the mouth of a pitbull has 42 teeth in place from the 6th month.
