Unmissable
Excerpt from the guide Library of the Traveler China
Shanghai

If the "Paris of the East" has culturally and economically shone on Asia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the vicissitudes of history - including the advent of the Republic of China - have made it fall for a while into a deep oblivion ... until it rises from its ashes like a phoenix and transforms itself into a vibrant, dynamic and ultramodern megapolis.

The great wall

In order to protect the Middle Kingdom from barbarian invasions from the North, Qing Shin Huangdi decides, in 220 BC. BC, to build a wall between Shanhaiguan, on the Bohai Sea, and the Gobi Desert. This colossal enterprise of more than 5,000 km - which will continue until the seventeenth century, under the Ming empire - represents the most gigantic work of military engineering ever made.

Guilin

The vast rice plain crossed by the peaceful Lijiang River is flanked by karst peaks in which caverns and caves are adorned with sculptural limestone concretions. In this timeless setting, often represented by classical painters, cormorant fishermen and peasants go about their business, little concerned with tourists cruising.

The Silk Road

Opened in the 1st century BCE by Zhang Qian, emissary of Emperor Wu Di, responsible for forging new alliances with the peoples of the West, this mythical road, evocative of silky riches and intoxicating perfumes, crosses, between Xi and Xinjiang, landscapes of extraordinary contrast: grandiose gorge of the Wei, desolate stretches of the Gobi Desert, eternal snows of Tian Shan.

Bingmayong

Wishing to continue his reign in the realm of spirits, Emperor Qin Shin Huangdi would have sponsored this terracotta army made up of more than 8,000 immortal warriors.

Lijiang

Completely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1996, the old town is now a national curiosity and attracts no less than 6 million visitors a year, attracted by its picturesque charms: winding and paved alleys, small arch bridges over clear canals and tumultuous ... all on the background of snow-capped mountains.

Miao-and-Dong Prefecture

Located in eastern Guizhou, this autonomous prefecture concentrates more than 20 ethnic groups - Yao, Shui, Zhuang, Miao and Dong among others - remains of a population displaced by the Han and come to take refuge in these mountains where it was able to preserve its cultures and traditions.

Huan Shan

Foggy at dawn, this natural wonder, immortalized by countless painters and poets, haunts the dreams of every Chinese who must climb one, if not the 3 highest peaks of these yellow mountains: the Celestial (1,840 m), the Grand Summit (1,860 m) and the Lotus (1,864 m).

Qinian Dian, Beijing

The 3 levels of the Temple of Prayer for good crops, covered with blue tiles symbolizing the sky, rest on 28 pillars: the 4 largest represent the 4 seasons and the double row of 12 pillars the months of the year. A perfect example of Chinese architecture made without a single nail.

Sanxia, the Three Gorges

Over the millennia, the legendary river "Blue", the Yangtze River, has cut through these 3 narrow but grandiose gorges in the limestone rock of the Daba Mountains.
