Presentation of the country
Nepal is a country geographically, financially and commercially
landlocked. Its economy is highly dependent on that of India which accounts for
about 60% of trade and the Nepalese currency is anchored on the Indian rupee.
Nepal is one of the least developed countries in the world, ranked 138th out of
177 countries in terms of human development index. The country remains largely
rural (82% of the population), although agriculture accounts for only a third
of GDP.
The years 2010 and 2011 were marked by a major political crisis,
with no government majority emerging from the results of the parliamentary
elections. The current government was finally appointed in August 2011, but
political stability remains the main challenge facing the country. The state
also needs to strengthen the control capacity of its institutions, including
the central bank, because Nepal's banking system is fragile.
Nepal is a fragile country that will remain, at least in the medium
term, very dependent on the support of the international community and the
transfer of its migrants. Nevertheless, development prospects exist,
particularly in tourism and the hydroelectric power sector (the development of
which may partly meet Indian needs).

Nepali foreign trade in 2016
Still strongly affected by the impact of the spring 2015
earthquakes and the events on the Nepal-India border, Nepal's foreign trade
last year was bowed for the third year in a row. Despite the drop in oil
prices, they remain very much in the red: while the import coverage rate fell
below 10%, last year the deficit in trade in goods stood at 45%. NRP (USD 4.2
billion), or more than one fifth of GDP. This imbalance, which is only
partially offset by the surplus of services trade, directly reflects the
structure of an economy mainly supported by remittances.
