The manatee is a marine mammal

Manatees are marine mammals

The manatee is an imposing marine mammal. It is an animal that measures 6 meters or more and weighs between 200 and 600 KG. His body is shaped like a cylinder.

It is also called "sea cow" because it grazes the grass at the bottom of the water. However, he does not ruminate.

Although he has a greasy appearance, he has almost no fat. He has no fur, but only straight hairs sprinkled on his skin.

As he is not protected by grease or fur, he is very sensitive to cold and therefore prefers warmer water.

His skin is thick and gray in color. His tail is flattened. He lives in the rivers and streams of Africa and in the warm waters of America.

It feeds exclusively on plants, either floating or submerged. It is an herbivorous animal. It can stay underwater for a long time because its lungs are very effective, and its nostrils close a little like an eyelid.

The manatee is a loner until he finds a companion to whom he is faithful. So we can see a couple with a teenager and a baby. Sexual maturity in the manatee comes around the 7th year.

After mating, gestation lasts 12 months and a baby is born every 2-3 years. The mother breastfeeds her baby in the water, and the udders are located under the armpits.

Winter is difficult for small manatees, who do not tolerate temperatures below 10 degrees centigrade. It has few predators, except probably some sharks. The propellers of boats that hurt them are a danger to their safety.

The life of the manatee is 30 years.
