The big oil companies are not only rich financially. They also have exceptional visual archives. And one of the merits of Frédéric Mitterrand, author of this documentary dedicated to Sheikh Zayed (1918-2004), a romantic and visionary character, diplomatic end and formidable tactician, former Emir of Abu Dhabi and founder of the United Arab Emirates (UAE, 1971), is to have had the idea to collect these archives. "I thought that they were necessarily documentaries for their staff, already present in the UAE in the 1960s. And bingo! Indeed, these companies had old archives. "
These unpublished archives enrich this one-and-a-half-hour film, embracing much of the political, military and cultural history of the Arabian Peninsula during the 20th century. "The idea of making a documentary about this character came to me when I read, more than twenty-five years ago, The Desert of the Deserts, a very beautiful book by British explorer Wilfred Thesiger, who surveyed the world Arab throughout his life. He recounts his meeting in the 1940s with the unknown sheikh of a lost oasis, Al Ain. Four pages in which Thesiger paints an extraordinary portrait of this man. It was obviously Sheikh Zayed, long before he became emir of Abu Dhabi in 1966. Since then, I have remained marked by this description. Then I met him from a great distance, and I was struck by his charisma. "
Oil, diplomatic weapon
More than ten years after the death of Sheikh Zayed, the Union of the United Arab Emirates has developed its own identity, different from that of Kuwait, Qatar or Bahrain, the other Gulf monarchies. The numerous testimonies gathered trace closer to the trajectory of a man at the same time conservative, builder and strategist, whose rise began with ... the setting apart of his brother.
Under the reign of Sheikh Shahbut, in place since 1928, the modest Emirate of Abu Dhabi does not represent much. In 1966, Zayed, the simple governor of a lost oasis (Al Ain), deposed his brother and brought Abu Dhabi into modernity. His relations with the British authorities of the time are well deciphered, as his way of making oil a first class diplomatic weapon.
Zayed sees far away, does not burn the steps, spares the susceptibilities. His plan is to unify the emirates in the same country, so as to resist any attacks from neighboring countries, including Iran.
For this, he must convince the rival of always, namely Sheikh Rachid of Dubai. In addition to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, five other small emirates will be part of the UAE, but at the last moment, Bahrain and Qatar will decline the invitation. According to Frédéric Mitterrand's commentary, the cohesion of the UAE, a new state born on December 2, 1971, is ensured by the fair distribution of oil profits and the permanence of Zayed's power.

Throughout his reign, he will strive to develop his country and cultivate valuable international alliances. With the United States playing Saudi Arabia, Zayed turns to the United Kingdom, but especially to France, which will become a privileged partner. From Giscard to Chirac via (François) Mitterrand, French politicians have attended and obviously appreciated the outstanding personality of the desert man.
