The gymnote or electric eel
Gymnotes are fish that can generate electricity
The gymnote is a kind of eel, so a fish, which has an elongated shape, which looks like a marine snake, except for the fins and gills it carries.

It is more often called the electric eel. She lives in the rivers of North America.
This eel has a length of 1 to 2 meters, its body is brown and yellowish. These fish do not have a dorsal fin.
At the back of his body are plates that can generate electricity. It uses it at low intensity to guide and neutralize its prey because it is blind.
But, to defend against predators, the electric eel can generate loads of 500 to 600 volts and even kill a man.
Electrical discharges of up to 800 volts have been recorded.
His skin is protected against his own discharges. Even 8 hours after his death one could suffer significant electric shocks.

The gymnote has gills, but it must come to the surface to get some air.
The breeding season takes place between September and December. Males build seaweed nests. The female eel lays up to 17,000 eggs and the males monitor them and protect the fry after birth.

Eels are scavengers
The eel is a fish that has the shape of a snake about one meter long and weighing up to 1 kg. The male is smaller than the female.

The top of his body is dark in color and his belly is yellowish. Its scales are not very visible and its dorsal and anal fin are united to form only one.
The eel spends the majority of its life in freshwater streams of the Atlantic, The North Sea, the Channel and the Mediterranean.
This fish is a scavenger and a predator. Since it is an animal that does not like light, it feeds at night.

Many fish for eel to cook recipes with their flesh that is fatter than most other fish.
The male eel reaches sexual maturity around the age of 8 to 10 years and the female around 10 to 15 years old.
She then makes a trip back to the Sargasso Sea where she was born to breed. This trip is 6,000 km and will take 6 to 10 months. The Sargasso Sea is located off Bermuda and this is where the spawning of eels takes place.
The female lays about 1,000,000 eggs, but to do this she must have the help of a pressure, and that is why she will lay it at 200 or 300 meters deep.
A few weeks later the fry, carried by the current of the Gulf Stream, will join the coasts. After 2-3 years they rise to the surface and join the fresh waters of the rivers.
After the reproduction the adults will not come back, for them it is death.
The life of an eel has an estimated duration of 25 years.
