The island presents a cocktail of unusual climatic characteristics. In
one day, it is possible to cross a region marked by a tropical climate, to
discover a corner where reigns a cool and foggy weather, then to cross an arid
zone. When the northeast monsoon blows, the southwestern side enjoys tip-top
weather and vice versa - it's always nice somewhere on the island!
Coming from the Indian Ocean, the southwestern monsoon, called yala,
occurs from May to September, beginning with a month of heavy rain, followed by
a period of brief showers. At this time, the tides are dangerous and it is
better to avoid bathing - even the fishermen are very cautious. Originally from
the Bay of Bengal, the northeastern monsoon called Maha is home to Sri Lanka
between Nov. and March. An inter-monsoon period (Oct-Nov) can cause
thunderstorms in any part of the country. But the weather remains generally
sunny and wet, some brief and heavy showers are not of refusal, bringing a very
pleasant freshness. After these torrential rains, the scent of sodden earth and
buds of frangipani embalming the air.
The southern coastal plains
suffer the highest temperatures - an annual average of 27 ° C in Colombo. The
temperature of the water remains at 27 ° C all year round. In the central
hills, temperatures can drop dramatically and nights are surprisingly cool. At
an altitude of 305 m, Kandy averages an annual average of 20 ° C, and Nuwara
Eliya, at 1,890 m, has a temperature of 16 ° C. An umbrella will always be
useful in Sri Lanka - to protect you from the rain, like the sun.
In Sri Lanka, there is no shortage of
accommodation options, from the 5-star palace to the basic family guest-house,
to the charming retreat, often enjoying a magical setting on the beach or in
the city. Hills. In the main tourist areas, you will find a myriad of very
affordable, family-friendly guest houses. In the best of them, you will enjoy
comfortable accommodation and delicious home cooking. You will also have the
opportunity to rub shoulders with the owners and enjoy the hospitality that is
often lacking at higher-end establishments. In most cases, you will have the
right to an en suite bathroom, a fan, a mosquito net (except in some upland
corners) - and sometimes air conditioning and hot water. If the hotels
belonging to the mid-range category are more discreet, in all the tourist
places you will find a good selection of accommodation located midway between
the simple guest-houses and the more luxurious establishments. Recently
renovated, the state "Rest Houses" have preserved a zest of their
colonial atmosphere. You'll find great 4 and 5 star hotels pretty much
everywhere, many focusing on the west and south coasts of the country. Not to
mention the few upscale hotels that have their homes in the big cities, and the
highlands complexes and the Cultural Triangle. They will offer you all the
comforts and services that you are entitled to expect - pool, bars,
restaurants, spa or Ayurvedic center. An enticing alternative to 5-star hotels,
boutique hotels are popping up all over the country. With a maximum of 20
rooms, they often enjoy an exceptional natural setting - secluded beaches, tea
plantations, etc. You will appreciate their modern decor, their cozy atmosphere
and their haute cuisine. These addresses, which rival the best establishments
in Asia, will leave you with unforgettable memories. However, they are not
accessible to all scholarships. While many of these hotels occupy
contemporary-style buildings built according to the criteria of
"tropical" modernism set by Geoffrey Bawa, some have preferred to
settle in restored colonial villas on the coast or in the highlands. For the
lucky ones, this is the unique opportunity to experience the quaint magic of British
Ceylon. Sometimes cheaper alternative to boutique hotels, private villas (Sri
Lankan equivalent of our cottages) have multiplied their offers in recent
years. Many of them are concentrated on the south coast, towards Galle,
Unawatuna and Tangalla, while others have moved to the highlands, occupying
colonial bungalows of planters. As these properties are too numerous to list
here, visit www.villasinsrilanka.com , www.boutiquesrilanka.com or

Hotel chains
Apart from a Hilton, a Taj and a Ramada in
Colombo, few international chains have established themselves in Sri Lanka. As
for the major hotel groups Sri Lankan, they offer services of international
level - rates to match. The 3 main local channels are Jetwing Hotels (
www.jetwinghotels.com ), Aitken Spence ( www.aitkenspence.com ), which manages
several hotels "Heritance" and John Keells (
http://www.keells.com/sri-lankan -resorts.html ), which owns the
"Chaaya" and "Cinnamon" establishments. Other main local
channels: Amaya Resorts ( www.amayaresorts.com ), Tangerine (
www.tangerinehotels.com ) and Serendib ( www.serendibleisure.com ).
Reservations
New hotels and guest houses are opening
regularly, Sri Lanka is still struggling to accommodate the crowd of travelers
arriving on the island. From Nov to March, you will have trouble finding a room
available in the most popular tourist destinations. If you are traveling during
the high season, consider booking; if you want to stay in a particular hotel or
guest house, try to book at least a month in advance. Many hotels have an
online booking system, while small hotels and guest houses usually (but not
always) accept bookings by phone or email, even without a deposit. On the other
hand, they will not always keep you the room after 16-17h. If you land
somewhere without a reservation, avoid following the advice of tuk-tuk pilots,
who will either direct you to unworthy accommodations, or drive you to a
facility that pays them a commission - then added to the price of bedroom.
Several reliable agencies manage hotel bookings: Boutique Sri Lanka (
www.boutiquesrilanka.com ), Red Dot Tours ( www.reddottours.com ) and Sri Lanka
In Style ( www.srilankainstyle.com ). Most major hotels in Colombo also have
agencies in the Arrivals area of the airport.
Prices
Sri
Lanka is no longer a paradise for backpackers . Today, it will be difficult for
you to find decent accommodation for less than $ 20 a night; in high-end
hotels, fares easily exceed US $ 200. In the most modest establishments, the
prices are displayed in rupees, in the most expensive they are in dollars (or
in euros, sometimes, on the west coast). Fees vary greatly depending on the
season - and your negotiating skills. The price categories listed below apply
in high season (Nov-Mar); between Apr. and Sept./oct. many establishments
multiply promotions, up to 50% discount. The government charges a tax of about
17% on hotel rooms, and many addresses add a 10% surcharge for the service. The
most modest generally have a price including VAT, which is not always the case
in the high-end sector. Check in advance what is included or not in the rates -
a 27% surcharge added to your bill at the end of your stay may leave you with a
bad memory, especially in a luxury hotel.
