The genus Anthrenus includes beetles from the dermestes family

Insects of the genus Anthrenus are polyphagous beetles of the family Dermestes (Dermestidae). They are small, and some species can survive in a home by feeding on hair, and flakes of dry skin that humans and animals lose.

There are more than 200 species described worldwide, but there are only 18 that are present in North America. Small in size, they measure from a little less than 2 mm to 4 mm depending on the species.

Their larvae are carnivorous, or scavengers, and they feed on insects and other dead animals that they find everywhere. As they help to rid the environment of carcasses, they are important in the animal feed chain.

They are insects that once adults, are protected by an exoskeleton. They have only two wings for the flight, and elytra cover them to protect them when they are folded on the top of their back when the insect is posed.

The body is oval and covered with scales forming a pattern usually quite characteristic of the species. The head carries small antennas whose last larger segments, gives a club-like shape. They are usually black, or dark in color, some with white, beige, or orange lines and patterns.

The larvae of the genus Anthrenus feed on decaying animal matter, we will find them mainly on insects and carcasses of dead animals, in the nests, but also on food that hangs or has been thrown in garbage. Adults usually feed on pollen on flowers. As some may seep into our homes, they are often considered harmful as they feed on wool, hair, and other food residues.

Like other beetles, members of the genus Anthrenus undergo a complete metamorphosis before becoming an imago, which is the adult insect. It goes from the egg to the larva, which will feed to moult and grow. After a few moults, the larva becomes a nymph which, after a while, finally turns into an adult insect. This one then has wings to fly, and to find a partner to reproduce.

Males die shortly after breeding, and females die after egg-laying. She will lay her eggs in a suitable place for the larvae that will revive the next generation of insects that will perpetuate their species.
