The story of Ibn Battuta
Q The
great journey of Ibn Battuta
The
great figure of Islam, Ibn Battuta, came to us as a writer, and as a traveler
he is also known as the great traveler of Islam.
A
contemporary of Marco Polo, who died the year Ibn Battuta started his first
trip, they could have crossed paths despite having never had the opportunity.
They are two men from the West, one Christian, the other Muslim who traveled to
the Orient and who told the story of their lives.
Biography:
14th
century man Ibn Battuta, his full name Abu Abdallah Ibn Muhammad Ibn Abdallah
al-Lawati at Tanji Ibn Battuta, born February 24, 1304 in Tangier and died in
1377 in Marrakech.
We do
not know very well the childhood and youth of Ibn Battuta or his training. In
view of his stories one can guess a literary and Islamic education without
being sure. Sunni Muslim, Malikite of Arab origin (he also specifies in his
writings that his blood is Arab and not Berber). Ibn Battuta's life is a
journey that makes him worthy of interest.
At
the risk of his life he will become one of the greatest travelers of all time.
His
life is a journey that starts at a young age he leaves Morocco at age 20 in
order to make the pilgrimage. This pilgrimage, he has practiced 6 or 7 times
during his life is the main reason for his journey. He has also traveled to
other regions and even lived in India or the Maldives.
The
pilgrimage:
In
the kingdom of Fez. It is necessary to wait for the annual caravan to be able
to go to Arabia. This one goes along the Moroccan coast, Algerian then Tunisian
until Tripoli and then will take the coast that leads to Cairo then it is
necessary to wait for another caravan which leads to Medina then to Mecca. It
is a long and dangerous journey, many do not return. Moreover on the road of
pilgrimage one meets tens of thousands of tombs. These are the difficult
conditions of the pilgrimage during the Middle Ages.
His
travels in China, India, Maldives, Mali ...:
Ibn
Battuta is not a simple tourist, he is a man whose job is to sell his talents
as a scholar, as a diplomat or Cadi (Muslim judge) in different places where he
is hired as in northern India in Delhi or the Maldives.
In
the Middle Ages from the 11th century Delhi began to be conquered by Turkish,
Persian armies. There is a real Muslim kingdom that has settled there. It is a
new continent, at that time it is a kind of "American dream" of
Muslims. Ibn Battuta wanted to make a career there like many Muslims at that
time with the Sultan of Delhi. He also writes wonderful pages on his trip to
India. He was subsequently sent to the Maldives.
a few
steps from his big trip:
Ibn
Battuta after his studies wishes to complete his pilgrimage to Mecca.
So he
left his family to head to Tunis no one knew then that Ibn Battuta would not
finish his trip until 30 years later.
So he
continued his journey to Cairo Then to the black sea he had crossed the boat
finally he could not make this crossing. He must therefore go around it through
the Sinai desert.
He
then arrived in Jerusalem, a sacred city of the three monotheistic religions.
Then
he crossed Syria and stopped in Damascus where he spent a day before joining
the Caravan to Mecca.
He
finally arrived in Mecca where he could make the pilgrimage.
But
before making his way back home he decided to go to Persia, then Turkey,
Arabia, African Horn.
Then
in China where he will meet the Emperor of Mongolia who asked him to be his
ambassador in China.
Ibn
Battuta then went to India where Muslims and Hindus cohabit there he stayed in
Delhi for 7 years.
The
story of his great journey:
In 29
years he has traveled 120 000 km or 3 times around the Earth, has crossed 44
countries and has reported a fabulous documentation on countries still unknown
The
journey of Ibn Battuta is a story and it is in the form of this story that it
has reached us. The ruler of Morocco decided to put this story in writing not
Ibn Battuta himself who wrote but a royal scribe, Ibn Juzzay.
This
story aims to distract the audience through detailed descriptions and anecdotes
that lived Ibn Battuta; but Ibn Battuta's primary goal was to describe the way
of life of the inhabitants of the Muslim world from Morocco and Spain in the
West to China in the East and the steppes of Central Asia to the north. as far
as sub-Saharan Africa in the South he describes all the powers that govern the
Muslim world of the Middle Ages, and even for the regions he did not go to, he
sought out very good sources.
The
story of Ibn Battuta has been translated into several languages, and the
picture he gives us is a remarkable diversity of the Muslim world during the
Middle Ages.
"Traveling
leaves you speechless at first, before you become a storyteller."
Ibn
Battuta
