Youssef ben Tachfine as-Sanhaji, is the third Imam and the first sultan of the Almoravid dynasty. Born in 10091.2, he reigned over the Almoravid Empire (from the Sahara to Spain) from 1061 until his death in 1106, and was the founder of Marrakech around 1070, which then became a capital.

1061

The reign of the Almoravids

Youssef ibn Tachfin founded the Berber dynasty of the Sunni Almoravids, who ruled Morocco until 1147. The Almoravids, who came from a nomadic Saharan people, were converted to Islam and trained in the use of weapons. They quickly formed an important brotherhood of warriors, ready to conquer an empire under the command of their sovereign. They will extend a few years later their domination over Ghana, on Saharan commercial circuits and on Muslim Spain. Youssef ibn Tachsin will thus exercise his power over Andalusia and the Maghreb.

1062

The building of Marrakech

Youssef ibn Tachfin, ruler of the Berber dynasty of the Almoravids, built the city of Marrakech, which will give its name to Morocco much later. Thanks to its strategic position, at the crossroads of important trade routes (gold and ivory), the city will develop rapidly and become a prosperous and influential imperial capital. When, later, the Almohads seize power, the city will retain its status as capital.
