Biography
Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad bin Mūsā
al-Khawārizmī was born around 783 in Khiva in the Khwarezm which gave his name,
died around 850 in Baghdad, Persian mathematician, is the author of the book
entitled Al-ĵabr wa'l-muqābalah , which means "transposition and
reduction", published in 825. The term al-jabr was taken up by the
Europeans and later became the word algebra. His other work, Kitāb 'al-ĵāmi`
wa'l-tafrīq bī h'isāb' al-Hind "Book of addition and subtraction after
Indian calculus"), is the first to speak about the system of Indian
figures.
The book contains six short
chapters, each devoted to a particular type of equation. It does not contain
any numbers. All equations are expressed with words. The square of the unknown
is named "the square" or male, the unknown is "the thing"
or shay or jidhr, the constant is the dirham.
His name, al-Khuwārizmī,
Latinized in the Middle Ages in Algoritmi, then in Algorism by the Europeans,
is at the origin of the word algorithm, which means "procedure". On
the other hand, the principle of algorithms has been known since Antiquity
(Euclid's algorithm), and Donald Knuth even mentions their use by the
Babylonians.
Anecdotally, we also owe
'al-Khuwārizmī the tradition of calling the unknown of a mathematical equation
X. Indeed, in his work' Al-ĵabr wa'l-muqābala, he exposes a method (an algorithm
in the proper sense, therefore) to explain an unknown, or "ay",
literally "thing", in a first-degree equation, using ĵabr,
"subtractions" (or "transpositions") and muqābala,
"equalities" (or confrontation of two entities). After several
avatars, ay (wrote xay in ancient Spanish) ended up giving X.
Gerard Berry said there was no
doubt that Al-Khuwārizmī was the inventor of computers. On the other hand, the
principle of algorithms has been known since Antiquity (Euclid's algorithm),
and Donald Knuth even mentions their use by the Babylonians.
Warning: this scholar should not be confused with another Persian
mathematician Abu-'Abdollah Mohammad Khuwarizmi who is the author of 'Mafâtih
al-'Olum' (work in mathematics, written around 976).
