Seals are marine animals

The seal is short and massive. It has a short and dense fur of white, yellowish or gray color.

His head is small and he has two big black eyes. The day its pupils become thinner while in the water or in the darkness they widen like those of a cat. Above his eyes he has three eyebrows and his ears are just two holes that close during the dive. His nostrils also close under the water.

His incisor teeth, molars and canines serve him to shred his food. He has long, stiff mustaches. By cons his tail is very short, no more than 15 cm. The long claws of his anterior fins help him get back on the ice. On each side of the tail it has two webbed feet with five fingers adorned with claws.

The seal is a swimming champion. In the spring it heads north, down to the south at the end of the winter. He spends most of the day feeding on capelin, herring, shrimp, crab, lobster and squid. The largest fish are transported on the pack ice, cut up and eaten on the spot.

The mating season lasts 4 to 8 weeks. Females gather on ice where they were born 5-6 years ago. Mating takes place mostly under water. After the 7-month gestation, only one little baby will be born and the males will leave to look for food.

After two weeks the little "whitecoat" is weaned and his mother abandons him to his fate. Since he can not do anything, he will spend his time having fun and sleeping. He will lose his white baby fur to become an adult and until he is one year old, he will drift by feeding on plankton and small fish as he does not yet know how to hunt. Then he will head north to join the group of adults.

He has been hunted by man for his skin, especially the baby seal that is covered with white fur. The hunt is now very controlled.

The longevity of the seal is estimated at 20 to 35 years.
