The hornbill is characterized by its black plumage, its white and black tail, and its large yellow helmet above the skull, which serves as a sounding board to amplify its song and so call its congeners.

We can recognize the female as in the photo above at the back of the helmet, which is red in it, while that of the male is black. Another notable difference is in the iris which is blue in the female and red in the male.
