Excerpt from the
travel guide book Nepal Traveler
The plane begins
its final approach of Kathmandu (Kathmandu), and we discover through its
portholes a monumental barrier of rock and ice, the Himalayas. Thus unfolds
Nepal, like a dazzling lace of snowy peaks. Then, at lower altitudes, emerald
bumps emerge, the country's historic heart, and the Kathmandu Valley.
You will probably
start your journey by visiting the capital and its medieval center: change of
scenery assured, even if in these old districts sometimes triumphs an
aggressive modernity. But the past has kept its glow in the neighboring cities
of Patan and Bhaktapur. Further afield, the valley offers an endless succession
of temples, traditional Newar villages and memorable panoramas.
If you manage to
tear yourself away from the Kathmandu Valley, the sinuosities of the Hill
Region lead you further west to Pokhara and its shimmering lake, in a
glittering mountain setting. Among other peaceful but exciting small towns,
discover Gorkha, Bandipur or Tansen. Nepal has a very different face to you in
the South, in the Terai, belt of tropical plains bordered by the Indian border.
A few tigers still crisscross the Chitwan and Bardia national parks, and
captivating legends and stories await you at historical sites like Lumbini,
where the Buddha was born.
To the north, of
course, the Himalayas fascinate like few countries in the world. Most travelers
choose from 3 destinations: the Annapurna Range, the Everest Region and the
Langtang-Gosainkund-Helambu area, north of Kathmandu. Farther away, much less
traveled regions reserve their splendor for the adventurous traveler: Manaslu,
Kanchenjunga, Mustang, and others.
Durbar Square,
Kathmandu
All the soul of
Nepal emanates from this swarming place: pilgrims and tourists weave among
statues of stone, votive columns and itinerant merchants to discover, at random
of a temple with multiple roofs, Hanuman Dhoka, former seat of royal power, the
Taleju Mandir, a huge temple dedicated to the goddess Taleju Bhawani, or even
the Kasthamandap, the historic hub of Kathmandu and the oldest trading hall in
the valley.
Boudhanath
The popular
district north-east of Kathmandu is home to the largest stupa in the country
but also a large Tibetan community arrived in the 1960s after the flight of the
14th Dalai Lama in 1959. Witness the presence of rinpoche (llamas of high rank
) realizing their circumambulations, and the construction of some fifty gompa
(monasteries), identifiable with their pastel-colored facades and Dharmacakra
(Wheel of Knowledge) on their pediment.
Swayambhunath
Every morning,
before dawn, thousands of pilgrims climb the 365 steps of the macaque colonized
hill to reach this shrine, the most venerated Buddhist site in the country
erected for more than 1500 years to watch over the city of Kathmandu.
Bhaktapur
Time seems to have
suspended its flight in this city founded in the 13th century by King Ananda
Malla on the India-Tibet trade route. The best preserved of the 3 medieval
towns of the Kathmandu Valley perfectly reflects all the art of urban planning
of the Newars: "magic triangle" formed by the 3 temples of Ganesh -
symbol supposed to protect the city - and the toles (districts) organized
around a central square adorned with numerous temples and religious altars.
Kathmandu Valley
At the same time
geographical and historical heart of the country, this valley, born according
to the legend under the magic sword of Bodhisattva Manjushri, unfolds its
undulating slopes, staggered with fields in terraces and enamelled with
treasures bequeathed by the successive dynasties: medieval cities, palaces ,
statues and temples. An ideal region for hiking, whatever the season, against
the backdrop of the spectacular and breathtaking snowy peaks of the Himalayas.
The Annapurna
The name of this
massif which culminates at the top of the Himalayan range to more than 8000 m
ignites the hope of any self-respecting trekker, because the famous Annapurna
tower remains one of the most mythical in the world.
Pokhora
An obligatory
trekker in Annapurna, Pokhora is always seduced by its serene lake where you
can relax after a tiring hike, its green hills contrasting with the colossal
peaks overlooking the valley, and its marvelous sunrises. Himalayan.
Lumbini
At the heart of the
plains of Terai, the southern belt of Nepal, nestles the birthplace of
venerable Siddharta Gautama, better known as the Buddha (Awakened). After
mysteriously falling into oblivion in the 4th century, Lumbini will be reborn
from the ashes at the end of the 19th century, welcoming a perpetual and
growing stream of pilgrims from all over the world.
Everest
Nothing prevents to
admire nor to contemplate the famous Roof of the world - supreme symbol of
Nepal - either during a grueling ascent to the Base Camp (5 357 m) or, much
less tiring, through the portholes of a small aircraft flying over the area at
an altitude of about 7,000 m.
Bandipur
A living museum of
Newar culture, this charming village located on a ridge at an altitude of 1000
m, which is discovered by strolling through its cobbled streets, is an
excellent base camp to walk the magnificent hiking trails of surrounding hills,
dotted with natural caves and temples, including Thani Mai.
