Far less coveted than Istanbul, ANKARA is worth the detour. Capital of the country since 1923, Ankara is the work of Mustafa Kemal Atartük, the founder and first president of the Turkish Republic. Ankara has preserved beautiful vestiges of the past, while accelerating its modernization. A few days are enough to discover the different neighborhoods and monuments of the city but Ankara can be a good starting point to visit the Anatolian plateau.

In the heart of the Anatolian plateau, ANKARA is 850 meters above sea level.
AREA
The Ankara Department covers 30,715 km²
Promoted capital of Turkey less than a century ago, Ankara has since undergone major modernization work. It concentrates all the political and military functions.

Located in the center of Turkey, in the Anatolian Plateau, it now has nearly 3 million inhabitants. Among the remains of its past, the ancient city has preserved a Byzantine citadel, placed on top of a hill overlooking the city, as well as ruins of Roman buildings.

But it must be admitted that the purpose of pilgrimages to Ankara is to visit the mausoleum of Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, and the museum of Anatolian civilizations, which houses a collection of prehistoric art unique in the world.

• History of Ankara
Traces of dwellings have been found in the region dating from the Bronze Age. But it is considered that the first real occupants were the Hittites 2000 years before our era, and that the city was founded by the Phrygians in the 8th century BC, under the name of Ankyra.
The Persians, the Macedonian king Alexander the Great and the Galatians (Celtic people) seize the city in turn. In 25 BC, it is the Romans who take the reins of the city. Emperor Augustus has a temple built in his name. Ankyra is experiencing a prosperous phase thanks to trade.
In the fourth century, Christianity developed following the passage of St. Paul. Ankara hosts two important Councils at this time. From the seventh to the eleventh century, the city passes under the domination of Persians, Arabs, and Byzantines who bring him a brief period of peace. After a Seljuk and Mongol interlude, Ankara suffered the invasion of the Ottomans in 1356. During the Ankara War in 1402, Sultan Beyazit was defeated by Tamerlane. The Ottomans took over the city twelve years later, for a period of four centuries.

In the nineteenth century, Ankara became known for its wool production. It is from the name of the city that comes the name angora!
The city reappears gloriously in history when Mustafa Kemal settles there from 1919 and leads the struggle for independence. To mark a break with the Ottoman dynasty, he chose it as capital instead of Istanbul in 1923. Ankara is modernizing then and continues to develop. The rural exodus pushes many inhabitants of the region to settle there, sometimes in very precarious conditions.
transport network
The capital of Turkey has an Esenboga airport, located 28 km from the city. A Havas bus connects to the city center (one bus every half hour, ticket price about 3.5?). You can also take a taxi but it will charge you the night rate regardless of your arrival time (on average about twenty euros).

Few flights to Ankara are direct from France (some direct flights with Turkish Airlines). There is often a change or stopover in Istanbul.
From Istanbul
By road, Ankara and Istanbul are 454 km away. The bus is the most convenient way to make this trip.
The buses of the main companies (Varan Tourizm, Kamil Koç, Pamukkale, Ulusoy) are air-conditioned. Once on board the bus, a member of the company will pour you some cologne on their hands. Sometimes you will also get a little refreshment.
The bus stations are located outside the cities. You will need to take a minibus or taxi to get there.
Avoid the train because it is very slow: 8h to Istanbul-Ankara!
airports
Esenboga, Ankara International Airport (25 km from the city center).
