REINDEER
Physical description
The reindeer (called caribou in Canada) is a fairly large cervid, weighing up to 250 kg for males and 150 kg for females. Its coat is brown or gray, with white spots on the neck, belly and legs. It has short ears, a small tail and large hooves that allow it to move easily in the snow. Unlike other animals of the same family (deer and elk in particular), males as well as females carry woods that have a color sometimes red, sometimes dark brown. Males lose their antlers in autumn, and females in spring.
His place of life
The reindeer is an animal from the cold regions. Indeed, his body is made to withstand very low temperatures and it warms easily, without the need for physical activity.
It is found in some European countries (Iceland, Lapland, etc.), Asia (Siberia) and North America (Alaska, Canada).
His diet
The reindeer is vegetarian and feeds on grasses, bushes, bark, birch and willow leaves, and lichens.
His reproduction
The breeding season is in October and the gestation lasts between 7 and 9 months. Generally, the mother gives birth to a single fawn, who will stay with her for more than a year before taking up her independence.
His life expectancy
In the wild, reindeer live between 12 and 15 years. In captivity, they can reach 20 years.
The reindeer scream
The reindeer is a rather silent animal. It is only heard during the breeding season.
Particular signs
According to legend, Santa's sleigh is pulled by 9 reindeer: Furious, Dancer, Cunning, Dashing, Comet, Cupid, Lightning, Thunder and Rodolphe
