Capital of Russia
■ 11.5 million inhabitants.
■ Currency: ruble (Rb.) 1 € = 47Rb.
■ Dry continental climate: cold winters (Nov-Mar: -11 ° C); hot summers (may-Sep: 27 ° C)

She can seduce and enchant as she can surprise, but she leaves no indifferent traveler. Moscow, with nearly twenty million inhabitants, is overflowing with energy even to the point of giving the whirlwind to who observes it. The Russian capital is constantly being built, rebuilt and metamorphosed, while preserving the richness of its past, starting with the Kremlin and its architectural and artistic treasures.

For Moscow, the quintessence of Russia, boasts sublime orthodox sanctuaries with gilded domes, such as those of the Cathedral of St. Savior, on the banks of the Moskva, offers the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Tolstoy, Pushkin or Chekhov, which the one can imagine in their house-museum, or open the doors of its many theaters, including the prestigious Bolshoi.

Here, the colorful bulbs of the Kremlin and the Red Square neighbors with austere Soviet buildings, the heat of summer makes us forget the long, harsh winters, the big engines of the billionaires sneak into the traffic jams, the babouchkas with their flowery scarves rub shoulders with the trendy youth ... In the metro, world famous for the sumptuousness of its stations, the Moscow crowd jostles in the long corridors and is carried away by the rocking of the vertiginous escalators. In this megalopolis of possibilities, nothing is easier than renting a limousine for an evening, shopping or having a coffee in the heart of the night in a shop or a bar open 24/24! Moscow is tamed.
Kremlin

Behind these red brick walls sits the Russian executive power. We enter this "fortress" by the tower Koutafia, located west of the presidential domain. Nineteen other towers - some of them with a red glass star - line the 2.2 km of this polygonal enclosure. Inside, beside the military and administrative buildings stand two cathedrals that still bear witness today to the religious fervor of the Romanovs.

Red place

Facing the Kremlin, it is a rectangle of more than 7 ha, located in the center of Moscow and full of history. Symbol of the Russian capital, Krasnaya Ploshchad is one of the largest esplanades in the world, classified in 1990 as World Heritage by Unesco. From here it is possible to admire the chiseled façade of the Goum, the former state-owned universal shop, the colorful bulbs of the Basile-le-Blessed cathedral and the red bricks of the National Museum of History.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Built on the Red Square and leaning against the Kremlin wall, the famous granite tomb houses the remains of the revolutionary since 1924. Only the embalmed body of the first Soviet leader, placed under a glass protection, throne inside the very dark building. Behind the mausoleum are the graves of some high-ranking Communist dignitaries, including those of Stalin and Brezhnev and Gagarin.

Lubyanka Square

On this vast square stands an imposing building, steeped in history. The yellow brick building once housed the headquarters of an insurance company before becoming in the early 1920s the headquarters of Soviet and Russian intelligence services. And if the names of these secret services have succeeded, the seat, he remained the same.

Bolshoi Theater

On the pediment of the famous theater, supported by white columns, throne the quadriga of Apollo. Founded in 1776, this world famous stage is the pride of Russia. Since its last renovation (2011), the Bolshoi has regained its splendor, its gilding, its symbols of the past, as the coat of arms of the Romanov dynasty, erased in the Soviet era. This lyric theater now has better acoustics, which was once damaged by the construction of the metro in the 1930s.

Pushkin Apartment Museum

Tolstoy, Gorky, Lermontov, Chekhov, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Bulgakov, Tsvetayeva ... Many writers have lived in Moscow, and it is possible to visit their homes. In the old district of Arbat, Pushkin's apartment-museum, where he lived during his honeymoon, retraces the life of the famous poet and exhibits many objects and manuscripts dear to the writer.

Cathedral of Christ the Savior

Immaculate, bristling with golden bulbs, the cathedral of Christ the Savior, the largest religious building in the capital, dominates the banks of the Moskva. In order to fully appreciate the gigantic proportions of this building, it is better to access it by taking the pedestrian bridge that connects the island to the north shore of the city.

Tretyakov Gallery

The visit of this museum is undoubtedly the best way to discover Russian artists who are not used to seeing abroad. In its historical building on Lavrushinsky Street, the Tretyakov Gallery contains many treasures of Russian art from the twelfth to the twentieth century. Icons, paintings, drawings and sculptures ... the collection contains more than 160,000 works, including the famous icon of the Virgin of Vladimir, the one where Mary and Jesus are playing against cheek.

Belt of Boulevards

The Belt of the Boulevards is the first of three concentric circles that borders the historic center of Moscow. Flowered in summer, snowy winter, this long driveway, ideal for walkers, along the roads but offers a quiet and relaxing ride north of the Moskva.

Novodevichy Convent

Somewhat eccentric from the heart of the capital, the Novodevichy Convent, one of the most famous monasteries in Moscow, is distinguished by its elegant Baroque architecture, built in the 16th century. Today, this monastery is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the cemetery adjacent to its enclosure lie the remains of nearly 26,000 people, among them personalities such as Chekhov, Rostropovich or Khrushchev or Yeltsin.
➔➔ Metro Sportivnaya
Kremlin / Red Square

Emblem of power since the Middle Ages and seat of the presidency, the Kremlin, or "fortress", drapes an enclosure of twenty towers a ghost city where palaces and fabulous cathedrals are home to the jewels of the tsars. At its foot, a stream of visitors sails from Red Square - 17th-century decor, home to souvenir merchants and upscale galleries - to the ancient moats that have become Alexandrevski gardens, popular with students. There emerge the glass domes of the Okhotny riad undergrounds. In the background, an imposing neoclassical thread: the university, then, on a pedestal, the former National Library.

Kitai Gorod / Ïauza

Between the remains of ramparts and three historic axes, the fragments of the "Chinese city" (Kitai Gorod), with the enigmatic name, recall a shopping suburb of the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. North Nikolskaya Street, the pioneer of printing. In the south, on Varvarka Street, the discreet hotel of the English merchants, in the shade of opulent parishes. Between the two, the prosperous Ilinka street, darling of the banks. The most popular bars prefer the streets to the east and the banks of the river Ïauza. It precedes the low houses of an old quarter of forges, and the anarchic place Taganka, with explosive neons.

Lubyanka / Chistoprudny / Komsomolskaya

Behind the inexorable prison of the KGB, a wind of freedom blows to the northeast, sweeping the square of Pond-Clear, a green lung of the city, the bubbling place of the Three-Stations or the fantastic isba of the painter Vasnetsov. In the east, we play truant to find a Baroque palace, gluttony, dance in a cellar, or admire the chinoiseries of the Perlov shop. To the west, one invigorates oneself in the Sandounovski baths, built in the dry bed of the Neglinnaya river, before going to shiver at the Gulag museum. Then, let yourself be invited to the circus by the bronze of Yuri Nikulin (1921-1997), a late clown, on the Tsvetnoy Boulevard.

Teatralnaya / Tverskaya

Place des Théâtres, the mythical Bolshoi and its ballets raise the curtain on a neighborhood of artists: opera, theater or concert halls follow one another until the romantic garden of the Hermitage and the Place des Triomphes. In the center, the Tverskaya Avenue shopping and chic cafes, digs a motley furrow of Stalinist buildings and mansions. From Pushkin Square, we reach the devil of the Master and Margarita of Bulgakov at the edge of the Patriarch's Pond, to the west. Residences with gardens also hide there, not far from those of the writer Chekhov, the director Stanislavki, and the singer Chaliapine.

Arbatskaya / Ostojenka

The delicious clutter of the Arbat, a bohemian and intellectual district. On Novy Arbat Avenue, "Las Vegas" modeled by Khrushchev: kitsch casino, seventeenth century church, Moorish castle, bars and shops with flashy signs! In the old pedestrian Arbat, antique shops, open-air stalls, and serpentine streets that contain curiosities. The most famous and the least visible: the house Melnikov (Krivoarbatskii per., 10), a cylinder-shaped constructivist masterpiece. The Prechistenka and Ostojenka streets, lined with museums, are quieter, to the south of the Pushkin Museum: one lined up with august palaces, the other with chic buildings.

Zamoskvoretchié

A former merchant suburb, Zamoskvorechie, a district "beyond the Moskva" spared by Stalin, has the air of a province. On Bolshaya Ordynka, the "Golden Horde", its main artery, and all around, succeed one-storey houses, bourgeois pavilions, shops, cafes and rival towers, inherited from pious guilds. To the east, the Tretyakov Gallery and, to the south, its annex for contemporary art at the Park of Culture. To the north lies the Baltschug peninsula, its house on the quay, the nomenklatura building (Bersnevskaya, 2), and, opposite, the former Red October chocolate factory converted into a trendy cultural venue.
